I dug up a 500 gallon propane tank and have got it stored in the edge of the woods, out of the way. I have wandered if it would explode, if the woods caught on fire, and how far back should I run ? Is there any safe way to dispose of the tank? Thanks, Alvinnms

I'm not familiar with underground tanks, but there must be a way to determine the amount of propane remaining by some kind of gauge on the tank. I just checked with a dealer for the cost of a used 250 gallon above ground tank. I saw several tanks that had been cleaned, apparently with a disk sander and awaiting paint. New valves and gauges were installed. Surface rust is OK as long as there are no pits, and there is NO testing of the tanks. I was told there are tanks still in use from the '20s. The dealer wants $450-$475 depending on age, with about 1987 the dividing line. Your tank should be worth something to a dealer, and more to a private buyer. Propane delivered price: $1.09 for the initial fill, $1.50 after, regardless of tank size, Central Valley of California.

Call your local propane company to see if they can get rid of it for you. First of all you need to know if there is still any large amount of propane in it. The propane company should have a device for burning off any residual propane. Once the tank is empty it should be safe, just don't let anyone try to cut it up unless they are specifically equipped to handle tanks like that.

Do as John said and call a local LPG company. They have disposal procedures in place and most are free. This tank will have a safety blowout plug on top to prevent overpressure from causing an explosion. If the tank is heated enough to open this safety plug the escaping LPG may or may not ignite, and will be extremely loud. When the overpressure condition ceases, the plug should close and seal again, BUT- corrosion and dirt may prevent this safety device from closing! Position the tank parallel to any structures, as the tank ends will blow out first should the overpressure device fail. About 17 years ago I lost 3 friends on the fire department while attempting to extinguish a 500 gallon LPG tank fire when it ruptured(exploded).
