I keep hearing this about people think their eyes have been burned by auto darkening lens.If the people who sell the lens knew more than the price of their prod's they could tell you that you get more protection from a auto darkening lens than you do from a standard green lens. The electronic lens filter all the time(all the time-light or dark state)The part that darkens has nothing to do with it's ability to filter. If you do an unusual amount of start and stop welding you may see some ghost images like you would see after a flash bulb but there would not be damage from U/V or I/R .Your standard lens would only protect you equal to the shade of the lens (most common sh.10) but all auto darkening lens give you protection to a minimum protection of at least shade #12 and some to shade #14.I have sold several of the new Huntsman #30104 lens @$161.00 and the Jackson helmet @$31.00 . This hood is solar powered/shade adjustable / sensitivity adj. with (2) sensors .This hood and lens combination actually weights (1) ounce more than a pipeline hood and less than most flip front hoods with standard green lens. This is the best value currently avail. Also this lens unit has a place for your welding magnifier lens so you people who need bi-focals can see what you are welding I do not say this is the best but it is the best lens I know of in the low price range. Good Luck !

Hi Al, I never did like the auto-hoods mostly because of the weight. After 4hrs your neck hurts like crazy. Most of the guys on my crew that tried them had the same complaint.

The best hood ever made was the Huntsman 411-P. Super lite weight and strong. Huntsman I think also makes a auto-hood and that one would be the one I tried if any, but be prepared to pay thru the nose for it.

Any wide face lens, flip-up face, auto-lens, and Yiks the dreaded sock hood, has there place for making a quick short weld in a tight area, but for general use every day use, they just don't hack it.

I have to agree with T_Bone.I also have used them in production welding.I noticed that after many flips ,your eyes will hurt, just from the mili-second delay. I will never own one of those, guess I still come from the old school.
