My catalitc converter are going bad on my GMC 1500 pick up has any one used them oxygen sensors simulater to make the service engine lite go out?

There are many different O2 sensor codes. ALL OBDII vehicles have heated O2 sensors in ALL locations-no exceptions. This means they will have four wires.

The codes can be shorted to power, shorted to ground, open circuit, bank rich, bank lean, or stays at center. There can be up to 2 upstream (before the cats) and up to 2 downstream (after the cats).

Here is the important part. IF the code is for Catalyist Inefficiency, the cat is most likely dead. Either from age, deterioration (falling apart like jeeps always do), or from contamination. The Catalyist Inefficiency code is set because the rear sensor has read exactly the same as the front sensors for a given amount of time.

There have been people who have built the device you ask about which simply provides a voltage which fluctuates between .1 and .9 volts. However, lying to the computer is bad, it will just reduce fuel economy and most likely lead to other problems. The time, effort, and money spent will be more than repairing the vehicle the right way in the first place.

I have seen some GM trucks that had bad convertors due to leakage. The assembly was a one-piece deal from manifolds to the main pipe. It cost a fortune. I could see your asking this question, the one I priced was on a Yukon and cost over $600. If your case is similar, perhaps a local exhaust shop could weld in the needed units a little cheaper.

Better find out what the real problem is. The catalitc convert's job is to convert nitrous oxide to nitrogen and carbon monoxide to H2O and carbon dioxide. This has nothing to do with oxygen sensors that monitor engine performance and adjust fuel injection, timing, etc. If you fake out the oxygen sensor, your ECU will not know if the engine is running rich or lean. Your cat converter may be allright and you only need O2 sensor. If its a one wire sensor, you can do a quick test. Hook a digital volt meter on the wire to check the voltage. It should be fluctuating around .5 volts. It if goes low or high and just stays there it 's probably bad. If you throttle up and down, the voltage will jump around but should hang in around the .5 volt range.

What year? OBDII runs a check shortly after startup to verify operation of the front O2 sensor. The 2nd rear sensor after the cat maybe could be fooled. New cats and sensors are cheap now anyways if that's the problem. The engine may well have a missfire and the proper repairs will return with improved fuel economy.

Its a new body style 1999 GMC 1500 151000 miles gas mileged is at 20mpg ,had a engine scan j9995,2 codes --needs catalytic converter, tested evap, has leak at fuel tank

OBDII system. There is a leak in the gasoline tank, likely the gasoline cap it's self. Or the vent pipe work up to the engine and charcoal canister. The O2 sensor fault I suspect is the rear one, after the converter. Try a fresh sensor in front of the converter and move the old one to behind the converter if they are identical. An old but working sensor makes the engine run richer that a brand new sensor.

The fact that the PCM code indicating "cat/con" is displayed DOES NOT mean it is going bad.

The servivce manual has a diagnostic tree that you run that shows you what the exact problem is. Most often it's an air leak, dead/dying injector, etc.

Any decent mechanic with a service manual can help you.

I don't think an Oxygen sensor simulator will help the Catalytic converter on an OBDII system. I have only seen them used on pre OBDII systems and only on GM throttle body systems. They are for replacing the unheated one wire sensors. Also your fuel economy will suffer. Of course there may be something that is OBDII compatible.
