Help short person needs weedeater

Apparently I'm too short to use weedeaters these days. I've been using a 20+ year old weedeater brand curved shaft weedeater with the handle and throttle trigger molded on the top/back of the engine. I always have the engine lifted a bit so the cutting head is flat or just slightly front low. It's beyond repair now and I'm very disappointed with the new ones I've tried. All the new ones have the throttle in front the engine on the shaft. I can't get the head positioned correctly with my elbow over the engine. I find I have to tuck the engine under my arm pit to get the head positioned correctly--and it is too darn hot for that! If I was 6" taller it probably would be ok.

Does anyone still make a weedeater with the old design that has the handle on top/back of the engine?

Any models made for short folks?

Strange. At a mere 5'6" I find myself too tall for most hardware store weedwackers. I have to stoop to get them down onto the ground, particularly the cheaper curved neck types.

Perhaps the 'brush handlebar' setup would be a suitable alternative for you. The models that come with it standard are usually high-end, straight-shaft models. You should be able to get a conversion kit to put a handlebar setup on the less expensive straight-shaft trimmers in a given manufacturer's product line. The trimmer is suspended from a harness (with adjustable straps to fit most sizes), letting the trimmer rest against your hip. You grab the handlebars, with throttle right at your fingertips, and swing the trimmer side-to-side to do your cutting.

I think almost every brand offers a brush kit like that, so you may want to at least go shopping and give it a test fit. I prefer the handlebars myself.

Redmax now makes a home series curve shaft trimmer that is not too long, I am 6'3" and it is too short for me.

Thanks for the advice so far. Keep it comming.

Roy, I talked with a Stihl dealer today who says they don't make the knapsack model any more. I'm afraid it would be expensive if they did but I would like to try one.

I have tried the straight shaft trimmers too but I find them worse. I've actually heard they were better for taller people who find other trimmers to short. Well at lest I haven't found them as being any better and the only ones I've tried I find it harder to control the cut so far out from me.

The dry wall stilts might be best! They must work well as I've seen those folks walk in them and they do it so easily. Those metal feet could even take a whacking or two. Humm on that subject do any of you watch "King of the Hill"? Rember when Dale got the suite of armor and began terrorizing the town impervious to, well anything they threw at him.

Keep the ideas coming.

I am pretty short. I been using an old stihl fs48 for 16 years, when it quit I went looking, and found a curved shaft echo that was close to the weeder I was using. Fortunately I found a guy who found me a new flex cable for the old stihl. So I am back in business now. Would been darn hard to find a good replacement for the fs48.

Chris,
I am only 5' 4" tall and i know what you mean! I use a Stihl FR85 'Knapsack' Brushcutter and I love it. I find it perfect for us shorter guys! Some people frown on brushcutters with a flexible shaft, but unless you flog it to death they are ok,just remember to turn the shaft around and grease it occasionally as it says in the handbook anyway, they are easy to replace if they do break.

Check the Weedeater Featherlites at Walmart, they have the trigger in front of the engine, but I noticed one of them has a pretty short shaft.
