Install winch on trailer

I'm going to install a 6,000lb electric winch on my goose neck trailer. I plan on having a battery on the trailer to power it. Is a deep cycle battery better for this or should I use a high amperage conventional battery?
Also, what is the best way to run wiring to keep this battery charged? Diagrams and wire size if you have it. my truck is a 03 dodge cummins diesel.

Install a 2 inch square reciever (as in class 3 trailer hitch receiver) on your trailer at the location that you want the winch. Install a 2 inch square tube mount on your winch. When in use slide the mount into the receiver and pin in place with a standard 5/8 inch class 3 trailer hitch pin. When not in use keep the winch out of the weather in a weather tight enclosure (metal box mounted to your truck or trailer) and "locked up" to protect it from being "borrowed" and not returned. A good winch will last for MANY years this way! You can also install the winch in a standard class 3 thailer hitch on the back of your truck and install a receiver on the front of your truck for a "front mounted winch" if and when neeeded. My brother in law even has a reciever on his tractor so he can use his (one and only) winch there also. You might be supprised where you can take a Ford 3000 tractor (and get back home) with a 6000 lb. winch mounted on it. Good luck, hope this helps.

Thats a good idea. I think I'll go with that and the welding cable idea with cable connectors. Thanks for all the replies!

i have an 8000 ramsey installed on my bumper hitch trailer... i have a 4d size battery (in a box) mounted right next to the winch... and i use 2/0 battery cable to connect the winch to the battery.... i have a caterpiller master disconnect on my truck that turns power on and off, in line, on the power cord that comes from the positive battery pole on the truck battery to the 4d battery on the trailer...this line is also 2/0 battery cable... i have a jumper from the truck frame to the negative pole on the 4d battery....i used welding cable quick-disconnects on both cables....overkill?? maybe... but now i have "bottom" to make the winch work properly... as i'm driving, the truck will charge the trailer battery... and i can switch the master discommect off for protection...i have the quick-connects permanently mounted in my bumper... right nect to the trailer hitch...

Use a deep-cycle and follow the winch manufacturer's wiring instructions exactly. I suggest the spiral-cell type battery like an Optima.

For the tow vehicle, I'd use a battery isolator setup to charge both batteries. That way, any time the trailer is hooked to the tow vehicle the trailer battery gets recharged. The wiring instructions that come with them must also be followed exactly. Most RV shops can install them.

Wire it according to this website and you will be equipted to connect to all trailers and RV's by simply carrying two adapters you bought from WalMart.
