Backgorund: i have a 1990 ford ranger has the 2.9l fuel injection, 4x4. now one day i was foolin around on the net and was lookin for headers for this little beast. Now first question is, whats your opinion on this, i wouldn't have thought about it myself but i have to yank the engine out to do some work for it. three, anybody know of a good priced place to get these headers. just lookin for a lil info and input as to weather (as my g/f says) "waste money" or to let it be... any input would be appreciated

Between the small displacement motor and convoluted exhaust to go around the transfer case and engine cradle, this is a bad idea. Put a 5.0 Mustang Cat and a free flow exhaust on instead. Good for 10-15 horse, but hardly worth the money, go buy a different truck instead!

It is mainly not a good idea because as someone else pointed out, they will always be rotting out unless stainless steel. Unless you enjoy working on exhausts every couple years don't do it. I put a set on a chev 350 1-ton, gained about 2-3 mpg and a little power but in the end I got disgusted with the rusting and went back to stock with y-pipe.

I have the same truck. When I looked into it I discovered there was two folks made headers for them, but can't recall the names. There was a big difference in price, which translated to tube wall thickness and overall quality. From what I've heard, both will fit okay. I think the cheap ones were about $170 or so and the expensive ones were about twice that. In my opinion, headers would be a waste of money.

I had a 1992 F-150 with a 302 that ran great with headers, I doubt they will cause any problems with the computer, it will adjust to match existing conditions as long as you keep the oxygen sensor. Might as well run dual exhaust, or at least put on a high flow muffler.
I have no idea how prevalent headers are for a Ranger, I got mine from Summit, I imagine a web search will turn up a few sources...

I guess its a whats meant for anyone to have but anyone who owns a ford product really does have my sympathies. I've owned 2 and nothing but trouble. My GM products(all that I have had) didn't give me as much trouble as one of the Fords. I know people do have good luck with them and if thats the case more power too ya, I'm really not meaning to knock them as it may sound, its just a personal thing.

These new fuel injected computer run vehicles are designed and tuned for a certain header air flow combination, you screw with it with headers then you will have nothing but problems. Need more power buy more truck, need good gas milage keep what you have. JMHO

I'm now 49 years old. When I was 16 I bought a not quite two year old 1970 Mustang fastback (which I still have)

I had the itch for headders, and installed a set and had Midas build a dual exhaust using 42" Big Daddy glasspacks and cougar dual exhaust tailpipes. It sounded great, more power, etc. (302 2V) Yes, a little louder but it had a DEEP throaty tone with those LONG glasspacks.

Wasn't long, the bottom of the collectors burned thru.

Hard headed me, bought new headders, different brand (both were brand name sets) and built a new exhaust again. After a few months, collectors again burned thru.

By then I had sold the original manifolds, but I acquired some that were a different casting number (earlier year) but physically the same, bought a new Walker single exhaust and went back to stock.

I didn't realize how loud the car was till I put the single exhaust back on.

Yes, My Jeep 4.0 has a stainless steel headder from the factory, but its made different, and doesn't burn thru, and since its on a stock exhaust, its not too loud.

I have a '91 Ranger 4 cyl, 2.3 and love it to death.

I wouldn't even consider the headders, expecially if you have to pull the engine to replace or remove them!!!

After building these ol things for more years than I want to remember. Clifford makes a set of stainless headers for the 2.9 very expensive. Get a K&N air filter. remove the silencer from your air intake. Install a 21/4 exhuast with a free flowing muffler from the cat back. that'll give you about 10 more HP. It really isn't worth the expense to get a 2.9 to run faster. pull it. Install a 5.0 and a t5 trans if you really want to drop some money in it.

The only thing I have ever owned with headers that was a jewel and wish I still had it was a 1969 GTO Judge.
This new stuff is too complicated to make them work.
Now with the old raw power - different story!!!!!
