I have a Ridgid Vac. It has a large paper air filter inside much like a GM truck. I don't notice any dust. BUT, if your gonna suck up water you have to remove the filter. THEN don't forget to reinstall like I did. That makes a big mess.

The paper bag type filter tends to let more dust out on startup than the pleated engine type filter. The elcheapo paper bags are really bad.

check for damaged filter, or improperly installed filter.

All vacs that use a filter will blow SOME dust out the exhaust when turned on (it's a favorite trick for the Rainbow sales people). if it's constant you need to look at the filter

Steve: If you want a vaccumm that won't blow dust when you start it up , get a FEIN vac. IMO I think they are the best on the market. They use two fans in there unit one for sucking and one for cooling the unit off. These unit are almost impossible to burn out due to there efficently to cool the motor. good luck, see link below

Either the filter is defective or the top is not on right. I would suspect the filter first, it is either torn, or not installed properly.

Maybe you are overlooking something, I never saw that happen before and have never had that problem.
