Bought some at a flea market and used it to repair some wind damaged aluminum martin houses like are common in the midwest. Worked easily enough but I felt the repairs were brittle on semi-hard aluminum sheetmetal.

I just got the new Northern Tool catalog and underneath the aluminum rods they had some with a lower melting point that are supposed to work with cast iron. Anybody had any experience with something like that?
It would be kind of neat to be able to braze cast iron.

I have seen this durafix material used to repair aluminum irrigation pipes in the field and it is indispensable for that purpose. That is why it is seen at fairs and farm shows and the like.

Cronatron Welding systems offers a choice of aluminum brazing products that meet or exceed any others on the market. Cronabraze58, a very low temp(780'F)alloy used to join thin sheets of aluminum at 43,500psi tensile stregnth, or Cronabraze56 a 31,000psi tensile stregnth that applies at 1030'F. If you'd really like to WELD instead of BRAZE they also carry an arc welding alloy called Cronaweld510. All of these products are easy to use and require no special expertise to obtain a sucessful repair. Any questions? cronatron2@aol.com

I picked up a couple of packs of aluminum rod at my local ACE Hardware and they worked just fine, I filed, drilled, and tapped the area I repaired. The rods had a melting point of 700*....

Just remember that you are NOT welding, what you are doing is more akin to brazing or soldering. It's better than epoxy, but still is not a weld.

Having been in the business of repair welding supply and consulting for over 20 years I can tell you that this type of product works well to join thin aluminum or to repair it. It also works well on magnesium. It is not welding. Soldering takes place under 800*f so it is not soldering either. Brazing is anything over that. The product we produce is exactly 800*F. A metallurgical bond is created with a tensile strength of 45,000psi while aluminum is about 34,000 psi. The rockwell hardness also exceeds that of aluminum. We call our product U.S. Alloy #328.

I once used an aluminum solder/brazing rod called "Chemalloy". I suspect Durafix is similar, but I am not sure. I have also heard of it under the brand name of "Alumaloy". (similar to Chemalloy). If Durafix is the same kind of stuff, it's absolutely wonderful! It really does work very well. You can actually repair aluminum articles without flux and without very high heat. You just heat the
broken piece with a propane torch, then after it's beyond the melting point of the rod, you rub the article with the rod, and the aluminum alloy will fill the gap in the broken piece. Great stuf!

If it is that good I will try some. It has a moneyback guarantee so I guess I can't loose. I couldn't find chemaloy on the web but I found alumalloy and it costs $20 more than durafix.

PS. Where in the heck can I get a few lug nuts for the front of my 9n? Tisco don't have them any more. some of those parts are gettin scarcer than hens teeth.
