I know, it has a hold in it. It is a new radiator that I installed 4 months ago. I was bush-hogging and the engine stopped running. antifreeze was running out about in the middle of the radiator. What could be the reason? What should I look for? Every time I have a problem with my 8n tractor with a 41 9n engine this site is were I go. I know I have a hold in the radiator, but what could cause it. Help

The most common materials for disapating heat are aluminum and brass which are also some of the weakest materials around but easy to manufacture. I've thought about making one out of titanium just for the experience. The good things about titanium is that is the most resist to corrossion material around, dissapates heat on par with aluminum and is slightly stronger than steel. The bad part is that it is very expensive even for small amounts on ebay, and it is difficult to work with due to its extremely high melting point and must be heated in a vacuumn or it cracks like glass in the presence of oxygen when close to the melting point. If anyone has experimented with this, I would be happy to hear about it.

Was tempted to buy a sign at the Denton show yesterday. Cartoon character and scene which I will not describe. Caption said "Sappo's Radiator Repair, The Best Place In Town To Take A Leak".

Thanks for all the comments and causes. I am going to pull it in the basement and check to see what cause it. Maybe it was a bullet. The engine is/was in good shape before this happen. But if bad comes to worst I will teat it down and overhaul it.

Let's also consider that the leaking radiator might not be the cause, but rather the effect of something else going wrong. If the tractor overheated for another reason and the radiator cap didn't vent the excess pressure, then that high pressure just found the weakest part of the system, which is that hole that just blew open in the radiator. As stated in another response, if your engine stopped due to being overheated, then you've likely got bigger problem$ than a leaky radiator.

Find the leak and see if it was cause by something hitting the radaitor (dented in) or by mfg default, over pressure (burst/pushed out/just leaking). A radaitor shop should be able to fix it in either case.

Bullets would. Even just one would. A stick from a branch would. A fan/water pump shaft that is to close to the radiator would. A pocketknife would. Have a radiator mounted solid to the tractor would. I had a "friend" throw a firecracker at the front of my 59 ford years ago and it blew a hole in the radiator.

If the engine stopped running due to overheating you have far worse problems to worry about than a busted radiator.

Common causes of a busted new radiator are wrong mounting and combustion gasses leaking into radiator overpressuring it. Wrong radiator cap is a possibility.

The storm knock down my power lines, so I didn't have power for four days. I finally got the old girl in the basement and took the radiator off. They were two small holes in the front. Before it started to leak I was bush-hogging and crossed over a ditch. Some say in might be a bad king pin , causing the fan blade to hit the radiator. What is the best way to check the king pin? I have never worked on that part before. I filled the radiator with water and tried to start the motor, it did fine. So I got lucky on the motor, but I will have to fix the radiator and find out what caused it to happen. What do you all think and what would you check or look for. Thanks Don

It hurts, but I'm going to have to agree with Ron again on this one. The other driveabilty problems also point to a cracked/leaking block/gasket/head besides the ovious rad leak. You didn't re-use old acidic coolant over again did you?
