Maybe this has been discussed before and I missed it- I have a 5000 watt generator, I also have a spare old 220 Birdsell buzz box welder. If I hitch the welder up to the generator can I do in the field repairs with killing the gen? It's a Deviblis gen. I would be using 6011/13 1/8 or 5/32" rod.

Both Lincoln and Hobart sell a combination Generator/Welder that offers either 4000 (Lincoln Power-Arc 125) of 4500 (Hobart Champion 4500) watts and AC stick welding at a max amperage of 125 (Lincoln) and 140 (Hobart), and duty cycles of 30% at max amperage.

I'm not sure the difference between the generators on these vs the stand alone generators.

A 5kw generator will do it if you stay with 3/32 rods. A 1/8 rod will burn up the generator. Don't overload the generator!!

Brett: This has been discussed numerous times before--the general consensus is that you'll have to try it yourself. Granted that that's not very helpful, but opinions vary widely. The official opinion from Lincoln is that they do not recommend it, as the arc-starting surge is beyond the capability of most small generators. Lincoln recommends no smaller than a 15,000 watt "stand-alone" generator to be used on their AC225 welders, and I'd imagine your Birdsell is similar. However, some people here have claimed they have used combinations similar to yours (5000/5500/6000 watt generators with a 225-amp class welder) with good results. If I had my druthers, I would not use this combo unless it was an emergency, but if it works for you, then it's better than renting or buying an expensive machine for occasional use. One other thought, however--5/32 rod is going to pull a LOT of current, and may well be beyond the capabilities of a 5000-watt generator, even without taking starting voltage into account.
