Any good suggestions out there for winding string trimmer line to keep it feedin freely til the end?

I have a ryobi, and it generally is pretty good, but I have recently had problems- especially when my wife or hired hands use it. One or both of the lines will vanish.

I read that one technique is to wind it so that one line is at the top of the reel and the other at the bottom- keeping the lines from crossing. ("crossing the beams would be bad..." - Ghostbusters...

A thought I had was to shoot some sort of lube in the reel- perhaps tri-flo, or pam cooking spray, or perhaps good old wd40.

I read somewhere that a fellow wound it with just one string rather than two- much more reliable. I may try this.

Just wondering what you guys do.

Yes, I know about the new quick replace string heads, and the fixed strings, but I want techniques for the old classic string trimmer.

Thanks-
Lynn Kasdorf

I have found that if you don't frequently feed line, the end will break off leavin' you with the situation you describe.

It seems 'tis better to feed a little bit frequently than to let it run a long time before you feed the line. By tapping the head when the line starts getting short, it doesn't have time to break at the point where it exits the head.

If this doesn't help then at least you didn't pay a lot for it. Just what do you expect from a feller that goes by the name of 0'Possum?

I use a little 34CC Ryobi, don't remember the model. I also had problems using double 80 line,it would get tangled and even weld itself together from vibration. I was told to use a single 95 line to replace the double 80. This was great advice,as the single 95 lasts much longer than double 80 and cuts at much lower rpm. I use less fuel and my hands don't tingle as bad after an hour of use. I don't remember if the 95 line fit right into the holes in the spool,or if I had to drill them out slightly.Just pull the line through one hole and insert it 1 inch into the other to lock the single line. I seem to have less line feed problems if I wind not more than 12 ft of single 95 line on the spool.

Have had 3 ryobi trimmers and have never had a problem with the string head. The two holes are inteded for the line to be doubled back and not cut. This could be the problem if yo are cutting the line and just sticking thru the hole. Also I had one ryobi that the line cut in a ccw rotation and the line had to be wound the opposite direction. I sorta liked that one but one day it got a little finiky so out came its replacement and it took a trip to the string trimmer grave yard. Maby your wife wants a new dress, car, etc. but the hired hand well--any way have fun.
