getting steel stud out of cast

I was taking a bolt out of a piece of cast, the bolt was apparently seized in the cast and the head snapped off. I now need to get this stud out of the cast. What would you guys recommend? torch it out, drill it out? I know that a Ease out wont help here, the threads are seized to the cast. Turn up the heat on a welder and gouge it out? obviuosly I want to do as little damage to the threads in the cast as possible. It is on a 53 year old tractor.....I wonder why it was seized???TIA.

I know this might sound strange but heat the bolt and apply Beeswax. Get it hot enough and the bees wax will be sucked into the threads and will let it come out with out too much trouble.
It has worked for me more than once. JWM

The left-hand drill bit technique has never failed me and is the least likely to damage the female threads.

There is a technique to it. If you are not familiar with it, post back and I'll fill you in.

Thinking about this use of heat to break a rusted bolt ,if one knows that the bolt will be a problem ,say on an exhaust manifold , would welding a bead without damaging the shape of the bolt head , help to avoid it twisting off in the first place
just an idea?

The technique msb presented is the easiest and has been the most successful for me. One key part of this technique is to use a nut about a step bigger than the bolt. For example, if you have a broken 3/8 bolt, use a 1/2 nut. Have your impact wrench ready, as soon as the nut loses color from welding, reverse it out with the impact on its lowest setting. It doesn't take moch torque, just that light hammering to break it loose.

Using a 3/8 drive impact furthers the "light hammering" factor. Helps to jar the rust loose instead of overpower it.

First weld(use a wire feed welder) a washer onto the bolt and then weld a nut onto the washer.Sometimes only weld a nut in place.It will come right out.Has never failed to work yet for me, even on old manifold bolts.The only thing is I have someone else do the welding now as my eyesight isn't so good anymore.

I had this problem last year, I broke an entire loader frame off of my farmall. The old H just doesn't dig like a D 9 Cat. The easiest way to get that bolt out was the way I did the 3rd. bolt of 6 on my H. Drill a hole all the way thru the bolt, small enough that you don't hurt the threads. Take a torch and heat the bolt cherry red and spray it with wd-40, or something like it. CRC makes one that is not flammable.THE WD WILL CATCH FIRE. If you spray it long enough it will put the fire out. If you do it twice the bolt will shrink away from the casting enough to put the easy out in and and turn it out by hand. It worked great for me with no major fires. Just keep the hose handy.

Is the break below the surface of the casting, or is some of the bolt shank sticking up? What is the attitude of the job . . . is the broken bolt on the top, side, or bottom of the casting? What is the working access like? How big of a hurry are you in?

If the broken shank sticks out of the casting, wire brush the intersection of the shank and the casting to clean off the dirt and rust. Then douse the joint with a good penetrating oil. (Ford Motor spray-can penetrating oil, Kroil, and PBlaster are some of the better ones on the market) while tapping the end of the shank with a little-bitty hammer. If the bolt is broken off below the surface of the casting, use the biggest pin punch that will reach the broken piece to tap the broken end.

If the broken bolt sticks out of the top (or side) of the casting, you can build a little dam out of toilet-bowl-joint wax ring around (or underneath) of the shank and fill the dam with penetrating oil to let it soak for a while. No need for the dam if the break is below the surface on the top side.

If it's safe to do so, you can use a torch to heat the broken bolt and/or casting. Spritz on more penetrating oil while it's cooling. (Some people advocate using candle wax instead of the penetrating oil, applied when the joint is nearly red hot.)

If enough of the broken bolt protrudes, use a pair of Vise-Grip pliers to apply a bit of alternating tightening-the-loosening force to the bolt while applying more penetrating oil. If you can use your third hand and the little hammer to tap on the end of the bolt while you do this, so much the better. Once the bolt starts moving, it'll come free with a bit more penetrating oil and wiggling.

Not enough sticking up to grab? Hacksaw, grind, or file the broken bolt until the end is flush with the casting surface.

If the bolt is broken off flush with or below the casting, evaluate your working clearances and decide if you'd rather drill the broken end for a broken-screw extractor or if you'd rather just drill out the broken piece. In either case, rig a drill guide IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

If you decide to try a broken-screw extractor, the Ridgid 2-piece straight-splined extractors are the best I've ever used. If you insist on using a "conventional" extractor, the tapered-square models work better than the twisted models within my experience. A box end wrench is fine for turning one of the Ridgid extractors, but don't even think of using anything other than a T-handle wrench on a conventional extractor.

If you go the extractor route, drill all the way through the broken bolt (being careful not to drill through the casting) using the size drill appropriate to the extractor. Once you've got that nice hole down the center of the broken piece, use that hole to apply penetrating oil to the inside of the joint.

A left-hand twist drill is ideal for drilling the broken bolt, as it will sometimes grab the broken piece well enough to turn it out of its hole.

If you can't rig a good drill guide, center punch the center of the broken end and do your best to drill a centered hole straight through the broken bolt.

In general, I'd suggest drilling the offending bolt out rather than messing with a screw extractor. With a good drill guide -- which can be as simple as a flat piece of half-inch stock with a drill-pressed hole of the appropriate size clamped to the casting -- you should be able to drill the broken bolt to the "tap drill" size of the casting thread. This will leave only a "worm" of metal in the internal thread that will usually unwind without too much trouble. If even the worm sticks in the hole, it will give way to a properly-sized tap.

Let me encourage you to take your time and work carefully. That bolt took 53 years to get itself into the condition it's in . . . if you can afford the time a few days of soaking in penetrating oil will be a trivial part of the tractor's lifetime.

Those same few days might also be trivial compared to the time and effort needed to recover from a gone-wrong "quick" fix.

They make a paste, called Stop Heat. Its sold by www.brownells.com a gun smithing supply hourse. Pant the cast iron with the paste (following directions). You can then weld a nut to the stud with out cracking the cast iron. The heat supplyed by the welding should loosen it up and you can use the nut to remove the stud.

Not sure of the diameter, but here are a couple of thoughts.

If its small..(3/8 or less) drill a hole in what is left of the bolt and get a square shanked "screw extractor"...not those twisted "easy outs" (they are worthless). Drill the center of the bolt out to fit the largest square extractor you can get in it. Tap it in to get a bite, then take it back out. Then get oxy-acytiline torches, and heat the perimeter of the bolt hole (the cast) untill its CHERRY RED. I mean CHERRY RED, and not before. When it is CHERRY RED, then insert the extractor and put a cresent wrench on it. With luck the bolt will start to squeek out before you take the temper out of the extractor. If you want, quench the extractor in water in an attempt to save it.

If the bolt is larger and its possible to weld a stud on it, do the same thing as above and then use a pipe wrench on the stud....and maybe it will back out.

I just had a problem with a hex socket screw on a tie finger on a baler. I broke 3 hex Allen wrenches and still it didn't budge with gallons of KROIL too.

Then as you said "cherry red" I heated the whole mess with a torch and sure nuf when it all got cherry red I heard and felt SQUEAK. Ah life is good.

Yep, hard to beat cherry red for removing stuck fasteners. I just had to tighten up some nuts and bolts on the final drive of my dozer. I couldnt get them to budge even with a 4 foot breaker bar. Heated the nuts to cherry red and they easyily dry squeaked tight. can't beat the heat.

Good deal Mark. I never had much luck with penetrants, but do use this method to get out old studs out of exhaust manifolds....and look forward to the dry "squeak" of it backing out. But man...it has to be real HOT.
