My 3/4 Sanborn compressor motor will not start, just hum and pop the breaker. If I spin the compressor by hand , it may start, but it is tough on the fingers. Once started, it will run fine and build up air to cutoff.
Just how does a capacitor start motor work? Are there points somewhere?

Try pulling the belt off the compressor and see if the motor starts and runs OK. If not, you most likely have a bad capacitor or starter winding. If it starts OK check the unloader.

MOST capacitor-start motors have a starting switch operated by a centifugal mechanism that opens the switch when the motor comes up to speed.

Usually, the switch is located in the rear endbell, opposite the output shaft, although some are in the drive end endbell.

Certain newer motors have electronic start switches mounted in a cover on the outside of the motor, similar to the cover over the start capacitor.

Your start capicator has gone bad on you, just go buy another one. Just replaced mine today, same symptoms. HTH

Yes, there is a centrifugal switch inside the motor that brings the start capacitor into and out of the circuit. If it fails, it can stick on, and cook the capacitor, or stay off, and cause laboured starting. I would check to see that the compressor is unloading properly. Listen for a short hiss of air after cutout that tells you that pressure has bled off from the check valve to the pump. If it is not unloading, the compressor will be very hard to start, as it is fighting against full tank pressure to get moving.

Thanks for the info. Once I get through this weekend's lumberjack competition, I will get a capacitor.
