mack air compressor

I have an old 79 Mack truck tractor that doesn't get used very much. Was OK when parked last but now compressor will not pump. Can put your finger over the compressor output. Is there anything I can do without replacing the compressor? Very hard to get to.

Hey there RJC. As a mechanic that worked on a fleet of Macks and other trucks for over 25 yrs I can sympathize with you on the compressor being a pain to R&R. If you haven't solved the problem yet, remove the little aluminum intake to the compressor and using a mirror, if needed ,see if the little plate holding the unloader valves is laying flat or has one side higher than the other. If one side is up ,try spraying some WD40 or Liquid Wrench or similar lube into the intake and see if the unloader will unstick. Taking the unloader valves out, cleaning up the O-rings and plungers and lubing them with some Lubriplate or similar lube will help a lot. I'd wager 50-60% of all compressors replaced didn't need anything but the unloader valves freed up! Good luck!!

RJC , Unloader in the head may be stuck open.

Agreed , Mack is no fun to put a comp on.

With no air in the system shouldn't the pump be pumping air even if the regulator has a problem? Have taken the regulator apart and no change.

from sitting usually the air governor sticks,

and that prevents compressor from making press.
