I have an electric winch mounted on my equipment trailer, been there a couple of years. I noticed the cable is looking a little dry. What I need is some suggestions on what to use to lube/protect it. I have searched around the "net",but have found a lot of conflicting info. So I'll throw the question out to the "experts".

2 schools of thought on lube for cable.... Some prefer a dry Moly-Type spray lube. In the past, I have used the foaming Motorcycle Chain-Lube with good results. I feel it penetrates to the core of the wires.

I thought that used engine oil was expressly made and sold for chains and cables??

From Wire Rope Corporation of America

The lubricant you apply should be light-bodied enough to penetrate to the rope's core. You can normally apply lubricant by using one of three methods: drip it on rope, spray it on or brush it on. In all cases, you should apply it at a place where the rope is bending such as around a sheave. We recommend you apply it at the top of the bend because that's where the rope's strands are spread by bending and more easily penetrated. In addition, there are pressure lubricators available commercially. Your rope's service life will be directly proportional to the effectiveness of the method you use and the amount of lubricant that reaches the rope's working parts.

A proper lubricant must reduce friction, protect against corrosion and adhere to every wire. It should also be pliable and not crack or separate when cold yet not drip when warm. Never apply heavy grease to the rope because it can trap excessive grit, which can damage the rope. Nor should you apply used "engine oil" because it contains materials that can damage the rope. For unusual conditions, you can specify special lubricants that we can apply at the factory.

THEY SAY NOT TO USE ENGINE OIL.

If you oil it the dirt collects and the fine grains of sand cut the cable. In the military we used solid film lub in a spray can keeps the rust off and doesnt collect dirt.

Well, I'm no expert, but I think just about any oil would do, from 30 wt to 10 weight. Maybe some loggers would know..I would think they keep their winch cables pretty well oiled on the skidders.

Thanks for the info, I must admit I like the motorcycle chain lube idea. Getting penetration to the inner cable sounds like a good idea.
