I have a Stihl Model 026 Chainsaw. I was cutting some medium sized sapplings down when the chainsaw locked up. I thought that perhaps the blade was too tight so I disassembled the blade and whatnot. It seems as if the gear that the blade is wrapped around is locked up. The chainsaw will start and idle fine, but when the throttle is pulled it just bogs down and the blade does not spin..... any suggestions??

Yep, the chain brake gets 'em all the time. Don't know how many times I've come across that with the kids on a fire crew years ago. Seems the Stihls are less noticable than on other makes. The second most common is a good sized chunk of thick tree bark wedged under the chain drive spocket at about the eleven o'clock position, sometimes hard to see in poor light.
Watch you legs and save yourself a hurt - wear a hard hat. Chain cuts are UGLY NASTIES.

If it isn't anything allready mentioned, check the sprocket on the end of the bar.

Remove the saw chain and bar. Inspect between the drive gear and the body of the saw. If there is any "stuff" wedged in there you'll have to remove it. If you are not comfortable doing this, take it to a repair shop. Do not operate the saw until you figure this out or you'll be buying lots of expensive parts for it.

Chris - as Joe mentioned, does this saw have a chain break? The gear which drives the chain is driven simply by a centrifugal clutch inside the drum directly off the crank of the engine. The chain break is activated by the handle, and is probably a band around the gear drumn.

If its off, then check to make sure that the band is free and that there are no obstructions binding the pulley.
