Ok guys, here is another of my dumb questions but, you guys are usually very helpful keeping me on target.

I have a 5'x12' trailer with single axle, 2" ball licensed at 3000#. Has any one ever made up an insert for one of these that could be bolted in to allow the hauling of livestock, especially 250-300# pigs? It could be bolted or pinned into the sides or deck of the trailer for extra stability. Any thoughts or concerns are welcomed.

P.S. I have a 3'6" x 3"x60" box that I put in the pickup now for little pigs but, I want the ability to haul more and larger ones.

Hi Dieselrider,

Since your dealing with live load weight, besure to make it where the animals can't gather behind the axle center line toward the rear of the trailer as this would make the trailer sway from too light of tongue weight.

Welded 3/4 square tube frame. With 2 or 3 inch welded wire fabric to form the cage, works pretty good. Bolted to the deck or side rails to keep the whole thing snug. One of the guys I've worked with lost his pigs on the freeway when the animals went ballistic and lifted his wood frame out from the stake pockets on his truck. His kids and some people passing by had a load of fun for about an hour. The State Patrol and the judge didn't think it was so great tho'.

If your trailer has stake holes. Why not build a set of racks like they use to use on pickups before they made stock trailers???If you are going to use this trailer a lot for other things and don't have stake holes, weld some c-channel on the side, can be used for anchour points for chains.Racks can be stacked up against the barn wall out of the way and not take up to much room to store. Then again if you already have the insert, chain it down and load up.

There is a company in Tx. that makes them. Somewhere around Bryan I think. I don't know about your size but they manufacture trailer, insert and all. 16 ft. tandum axle is all I ever seen. Pretty slick, take out the insert and you got a tractor hauling trailor.
