hello ya'll, recently i asked about converting 110 to 220 to run a well pump. we will be using an inverter and 2 banks of batteries. looked into that autotransformer gizmo and liked the idea of that.

well, T_Bone got me thinking about lighting too. 12 volt seems to be more effiecient on battery drain. do any of you have any suggestions on 12 volt fixtures? this stuff is all new to me so any help you can lend will come welcome to us.

You can get 12 volt light bulbs that screw into a regular 120 volt fixture, just wire the fixture for 12 volts. They cost more than a 120 volt bulb, but they last about 100 times longer. I have some that are still going after ten years also. Most Ace hardware stores carry them.

Since you will have an inverter to provide 120v, wire for the 120 and use the cheap 12, 15 or 20 watt flourescent bulbs. I got a free one for spending $20 at the supermarket recently. They're available for a couple of dollars each, and the 120 wire and fixtures are inexpensive.
I use an inverter and battery in my trailer with a 13 watt bulb which is equal to about a 60 watt incandescent.

Just remember to use big enough wires. A 12 volt lamp will draw ten times as much current as a 115V lamp of the same wattage. Not only that, but it will be much more sensitive to voltage drop: A five volt drop on a 115V bulb will be hardly noticeable. Drop your power to a 12V lamp by 5 volts and it will barely light up.

Hi Mud,

I bought a few 12v floresence lites about 10yrs ago thats still going strong in my RV. I usually boondock camp 6mths year, so they last well other than replacing bulbs.

I have a 22w, two tube that covers a 8ft x 6ft area well, about $40 from Camping World.com.

Then I have a 18w, two tube in the bathroom that covers 4ft x 4ft well.

I have another one over the kitchen sink. Doesn't add alot of room lite cause it's so low mounted but engough that the wife likes it.

They don't take alot of battery and thats what I like about them. My total useage is 30amp/hrs per day for the entire trailer with lites being our bigest power hog.

Camping World got bought out a couple years ago so you have to watch there prices. There's other online RV dealers that can beat there prices on some items.

If you're looking for 12 volt area lighting, check out a large RV dealer's accessory dept. You'll find 12 volt fixtures including 12 volt fluorescent lights that may work for you.
