I need to weld some 7018, but my small buzz box will only go low amps on D.C. Can I weld 7018 on A.C., if so, what will I have to watch for compared the the smooth D.C. running of this rod. I really need a high heat on this particular burn out.

I will be making a cover pass over 6011 where I Joined some 1/2 plate in a lap weld.

I was told many years ago that 7018 need plenty of voltage and I have found that to be true. I have moved the same old Airco welder around 3 times and if I have at least 250 volts primrary it will weld 7018 fine, not like DC, but ok. if the voltage is 240 or less they will bareley maintain an arc!

I'd use 7024 on AC for a beautiful cover (and strong) weld. I haven't found an AC welder yet that has any business trying to run 7018. Plus 7024 slag will remove itself. Just turn the amp up about 15% over the 6013,,mainly cause 7024 has a lot of slag to keep out of the puddle.

Try running an AC macine with a high-frequency unit on it and you'll never go back to DC.

You can burn a 7018 with an A.C. welder; harder to do; need to keep the rod down in the puddle; maybe manually knock a little flux off when starting a partially used rod; makes a very acceptable weld..... .I weld at the same setting (or maybe slighter higher) that I use with 6011/6013.

I have a rod marked 7018 AC that I use at home on my AC welder. It does not weld as nice as regular 7018 on DC, but it is close. I use a lot of 6013. I find the 7018AC usually requires 20 more amps than 6013 on the same thickness of material. I have never been able to weld with regular 7018 on AC. I think 7018AC can be purchased at most welding supply stores.

I use 7018 AC for building buildings remotely on my property (not for hire). I have a 6kw household gen that will put out just enough 220 current to weld with a 3/16 rod.

The reason the AC is not as smooth as DC is that the AC current starts and stops 120 times per second whereas with dc, once the arc starts, the current never stops.

I have selected the 7018 and 7018 AC as my rods of choice for all work. Haven't been disappointed like I was with 6011 and 6013.
