I have Ford 601, I was having some trouble with it losing power after running until hot. The first thing I did was ck compression. I am confused by my readings as to what they mean. My first reading on first stroke was about 80 Psi. 2nd 100 and 3rd 125. Is this to low. Should my first reading be higher, or do I go by my 3rd reading? This was the pattern on all cylinders. I did change the coil and I have had no problems with loss of power but is my tractor in need of an overhaul? Any help would be great.

Hi Travis, Your readings are just fine. Thats the way a compression test gauge works. You should let it crank until the gauge quits climbing. Then after you do all the cylinders, then go back over each one and squirt a little oil in each cylinder then take another reading. If pressure gains after oiling then rings & valves are bad. But you have good compression on all cylinders over a 100psi and each cylinder is close to one another in psi (all cyllinders are in balance) which is more important than a high compression reading in each cylinder. Compression tests should also be preformed on a warm engine as a cold engine could show low psi.

I thought that if you had low compression and it came up after squirting oil in, that indicated the rings were worn, and if it didn`t raise, that indicated bad valves.

Me too. Oil won't help seal valves much.
