YTers,

Anybody have a preference for direct drive, gear driven or belt driven pressure washers? I have a buddy getting ready to buy one and we wonder why you'd bother with gears or belts if the pump can be direct driven.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
IMHO I would steer away from the direct driven pumps. I would go with the the belt driven pump. All of the direct driven pumps that I have been around eventually wear the keyway in the crankshaft of the engine. Then you must either have it built up and turned down or buy a new crank. Most of the time it also eats the pump drive up at the same time. With the belt drive just keep the belt tight and keep good clean oil in them and go to washing.

Bill,

I bought a washer just like Ron described from Northern about 6 years ago and it still goes strong. It's a 2000 psi, 3 gpm CAT pump, and has a 5.5 hp Honda OHV engine. It has worked out great and I've never had a single problem with it.

www.northerntool.com sells direct drive washers with CAT pumps and Honda engines. If I ever need to buy one again, that's what I'll get.

Three piston ceramic pumps made by at least Commet or Cat for the best durability. Leave the other brands in the store.Only for twice a year hobby useage. Purchase something that will take hotwater. Get more pressure and volume than you think is needed as well.
