What type of shirt/clothing do you weld in ? Is there any product out there other than cotton denim that is cool, yet provides protection from the heat and brightness ?

I have been using denim for years and it sometimes gets a little hot in the summer.

Hard woven WOOL is better than cotton jeans. (old WW2 army/navy) loose fitting. Wool doesn't catch fire, it scorches ands stinks but doesn't flame. It doesn't melt like poly-whatevers. Tankers and turret gunners still prefer wool over Modern Miracle Fabrics. While chrometanned ruffout leather has its merits, WOOL is actually COOLER..... ..Dell, headshepherd RockyRidge SheepStation

Find the heavest weight 100% cotton you can find, and STARCH it very heavy !!! The more starch the better. The buckshot will bounce off, unless it falls in a crease.

Ware (SP ??) a t-shirt to soak up the sweat, and get the shirt a couple of sizes larger than you normaly ware, so it will sort of hang on you.

UG!

Dickies bibs are the toughest I have found and I always wear two or three cotton long sleeve shirts. Always wear a shirt ON TOP of your bibs so nothing gets in your pants. I have a set of welding sleeves made from a old pair of jeans I occasionally wear when doing a lot of over head but mainly, my work shirts have holes all over the sleeves.....wonder why. My arms are pretty scarred to but when you have that perfect bead running, you can't stop just because a piece of slag is making its way through your skin to the bone. I would love to have a pair of good welding leathers but I have nevwer seen a pair big enough for me. I guess to sum it up....cotton/denim.

I recall as a kid learning some new words from my uncle who used to be in the army. He was squatting down welding something when suddenly he dropped everything and started to dance and shout. Later when the commotion died down, the holes burned through the fly area of his pants were pointed out to those wondering what the issue was.

Bill, I don't know why you would want to weld in your clothing!

It seems the close proximity of vital body parts and the severity of any burns would discourage you from sticking a torch down your jeans or a MIG tip under your t-shirt! But what do I know?

I've seen crazier pursuits on this web-site... like guys who actually continue to farm year after year, after year, after year.... 8^)

Try getting yourself some BDU's from the flea market or surplus store. They're cheap, usually hold up pretty well, and won't cost alot.

I've always heard that you wanted to wear cotton if you were welding, and avoid anything with polyester. Personally I have found just the opposite. It always seemed like if I was wearing cotton the spatter tended to burn through the cloth and then hang around inside the garment burning me in several different places before it cooled down. Then the burn holes got a little bit ragged making the garment that much more likely to outright catch on fire. I always liked a 50/50 polycotton blend. First if a hot ball hit the garment it would melt through leaving a hole with hard edges that weren't likely to catch fire. Too the ball usually had enough heat in it to burn through two layers of material so it would come in one side and go right out the other instead of hanging around burning me over and over. I've been doing welding work pretty regular for over ten years now and have as yet to catch fire from wearing a polycotton blend. I've got shirts that have been with me for many of those years that all have little spatter holes in them and they are still going strong and not unravelling, etc like a pure cotton shirt would. Still when it all comes down to it nothing beats leather..... Just my .02

Hi Bill,

Carhart 10oz ? unlined bibs can't be beat as they save your cloths form both welding and grinding and take the heat well. For good movement order them 2" larger in the chest size and 2" shorter in the inseam. This keeps you from walking on the bib pant cuff when loaded with tools in the pockets. Gempler has a sale every year and I load up, about $44eh delivered.

Wrangler makes a lite blue (only color) snap long sleave western shirt thats easy to open when you get a "hot" one down the chest. I never ware a button shirt as it's too slow to open and I rip the buttons off. A Cotton mix but doesn't stick to the skin. Wal-mart about $16eh.

Theres also a dark blue cotton snaps made by ? (CRS) long sleave that great for winter time. Heavy cotton and to hot for summer time for me.

Never all rayon, nylon or polyester as stated, as you get burnt twice, once from the hot dingle berry and once from the material.

I've had good luck with shirts from LAPCO. They are available in a few different styles of flame resistant fabric. They appear pretty heavy but breathe pretty good. They are available through Linweld or check them out on the web at Link I've also found that heavy starching helps to extend the life of denim welding shirts.

Weld naked, it saves the clothes and keeps you awake. NOT
There are some other flame retardent type fabrics but they are hotter than denim in the summer. Our uniform supplier gives us cotton shirts that are lighter than traditional denim. Maybe check out wearguard.com and compare the weight of the fabrics availabe in 100% cotton.

It doesn't make much difference what you wear if you accidently stick a red hot mig wire between the buttons on your 501 jeans, which happened to a fellow at work.

Don't wear any polyesterclothes. If it starts to burn it will stick to your skin.
