is it possible to convert the 110 power from a 6000 watt inverter to run a 220 submerseble well pump?

Got an old 110/220 Volt motor? Just hook the 110 from the inverter up to to the 110V tap and pull your 220 off the 220 V tap. Called a rotary converter. A 110/220 transformer would do it too but you probably don't have a big enough one lying around.

I've been able to run a 1/2 HP submersible pump using a 115V alternator driving a 1000 VA autotransformer. If your 6 KW inverter is truly a 6 KW inverter, you should have no problem doing the same. (746 W = 1 HP)

Autotransformers are available at Allied Electronics. Their part number P-8689 is what you want. Note that if you're using an autotransformer, you must keep whatever you're powering completely isolated from the rest of the world, because one leg of the low side is tied to one leg of the high side. (There is only one winding in an autotransformer, no "primary" and "secondary".) If this might be an issue, go with an isolation transformer which will be heavier and more expensive, but safer. Allied stocks those too.

You can stack 110 volts inverters and get 220 volts. I'm not sure about your inverter but I would suggest you contact Hardy Diesel or a photovoltaic sp? company i.e. alternative energy or even an inverter comapny tech support.

Sorry, I mis read your post the first time. No you can not get 220v from a 110v inverter. You would need a 220v inverter. It'd take like a million amps off a 12 volt system to do the job.(not really a whole million,only a half million) Ha!! 220v consists of two 110v lines working against each other. 110v consists of one 110v line and a neutral. Just ain't gonna work.

I bought a gas powered 5500 watt generator at sams for $459 . It runs the deep well pump fine. It'll also run the mig welder and it'll run the ac/dc stick if I keep it down below 125 amps. It is the best $459 I ever spent. I had a little inverter,500 watt I think. I blew it out with a skill saw. If you go with an inverter I hope you have better luck. Arent those things expensive?

Hi Mud,

I'm with Chris as it's more cost effective to go with a genset, pump into a storage tank, then pressure the house system with a seperate pump from the storage tank.

If your wanting to stay "off grid" then consider using RV 12v Surflow pumps, 3gpm @35psi, about $60eh at Camping World, for a pressure pump. Need more volume, parallel two pumps into a common header or you can set them up with a bladder tank (less pump run time, more volume).

If you buy a electric start genset it's easy to set them up for automatic start/stop depending on the storage tank water level.

I've been all solar on my RV for the past 4yrs. I hate gensets as it disturbes my peace of mind when I'm in the backcountry.

While the genset is pumping water you can also wash/dry cloths. You can put in a manual start in the laundry room for wash time.

If you like being off grid, then consider a used VW diesel to power the generator as they burn about 1gal #2D hour with about 24hp @ 1800rpm.

Anytime you use a invertor it's gets expensive real fast. Use straight DC where ever you can.

Yes,but. A capacitor addd to the 240V circuit taking 3 or 4 amps of reactive power will ease the invertor's load. You must have one honken big set of batteries however. How large is the pump?

thanks- this is stuff i dont know much about-- but learnin more everytime i ask.

i want to run two banks of batteries. then call on them together when the pump is needed for 10 minutes or so, every once in a while.

the rest of the draw on the system would be minimal compared to the draw the pump produces.

dont have the clams for the size inverter i need,
not yet anyway-- am starting to collect the batteries.

When you are looking for batteries try and get used electric forklift batteries. I'm completely off the grid. I ran off generaters for years. Went solsr last May. I work in a large grocery warehouse and I got some used forklift batteries. I got 1 48 volt 850 amp hour battery and 2 24 volt 750 amp hour batteries. I split the 48 into 2 24 volt batteries. Your batteries are only as good as your worst battery. So basically I have 4 750 amp hour batteries. I have 20 75 watt solar panels and 2 wind generaters. I havent had any trouble with my system. Check and see if there is a used forklift dealer in your area. The only down side to these batteries is they are damn heavy.

The 120V needs to be stepped up to 240 with a transformer.7.5 or 10KV Transformers with 480V or 600V on the primary and 120/240 on the secondary are a dime a dozen. Just leave the high voltage side disconnected, apply 120V across the neutral and one line of the 120 and take 240 from line to line for the pump. The transformer will smooth the invertor's modified sine wave output. A capacitor drawng 1/4 to 1/3 of the motors full load amps will handle the reactive power on the 240V side. We don't know your full story but maybe a decent generator maybe the way to go here.
