I'm posting this as I wait for the bleeding to stop. So here's what I'm looking for. I want a tool to use on the heavy duty snap rings, not the ones with the nice ears & holes to get the tool in. I'm talking about the shaft retainer rings that are either cut square on the ends or cut on a bias so they come to a point on the ends. IH seemed to be in love with the dXXXX things. Somebody, somewhere must have come up with a tool to deal with them. I want it, I want it bad.

Blackhawk makes one for external use, PT1266.
It might fit up to 2" shafts.

Those type of snaprings are always a fight, but a couple of steel pointed pick tools, and small screwdrivers, you can win, with luck.

You ought to try the one used by Northwest on the center pin of some of their cranes. It's an external type, about 5 inches in diameter, nearly 5/16 thick and 1/2 wide. It takes two MAC PB22 pry bars back to back to spread it, and at least two big screwdrivers to stick behind it to keep it from jumping back into the slot. Then add a third bar to pop it above the slot while you spread it apart with the other two and the screwdrivers. It can be removed easily by one atheist (if your alone you'll lose your religion within 5 minutes, guaranteed) or two good men....Seriously, as the other posts said check out the various tool suppliers, I know several of them carry the pliers your talking about. I don't remember what brand I've got right off, but they are for the external type rings. They have a compound joint to increase the leverage, and square ends that have a squared 'dimple' to help hold the ends of the rings. As for the internal types without the rings, if anyone can come up with a tool for those I want to buy stock...The easiest way I know of is to get behind the cutout on one end with a screwdriver and pry it out a little. Then put another thin screwdriver behind it and pry a little more, while at the same time putting some upward pressure on it, and move the first screwdriver over to the gap you created with the second screwdriver. Keep leap froging the screwdrivers around the ring til it will come out easily.....Good luck.....

You might want to talk with your local Snap-On or MAC Tool Salesperson. Or maybe take a trip to your nearest Sears Store to look in the pliers or specialty tools selections. They sell a Retaining Ring Pliers, I have a Snap-On pair that when I was working in the garages on Ag / Industrial Equipment they were used quite frequently during transmission and gear box repairs.

Best of luck with your task, and hope this idea is of assistance.

Ya beat me to it! And NAPA has them too, with two pair of jaws, one for internal rings, one for external. $30 any NAPA store.

Ron,

Thanks for the tip on NAPA. I've purchased a few specialty tools from the NAPA Auto Parts Stores that I needed when Sears didn't have them and a Tool Truck wasn't available. When I posted, I'd completely forgot about them.

Had a internal one on a Case drawbar roller, bugged me for years. One second with a Ox/act. cutting torch solved the problem.
