hello, ...i have a 1997 chevy 2500 4x4 with 5 sp. and 454 engine. yesterday, i had a hard time getting it to shift out of gear, and today when i went to start the engine it did not want to disengage to nuetral, it was like starting it in gear with it moving forward as i turned the key. does this truck have a self adjusting clutch ? can i manually adjust same ? what do you think is wrong ? thanks, chainsaw

I got a 92 with the same problem...rakes when you try to shift it. New throw out bearing and the little pin thats pressed in the bellhousing ($61+ for it alone) that the throwout fork pivots on. The rest of the stuff looked good, pressure plate and fairly new disc...but it's all gotta come out again and replace with all new...I've bled the clutch cylinder, it's okay. Some don't know that half way up on the passenger side of the bellhousing is a zerk fitting to grease the end of the clutch pivot pin. Mine was worn .055" in comparison with the new one...I should have shimmed the old one a 1/16" and gave them back the $61 pin. So, pilot bearing, disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pivot pin, clutch fork and the hydraulic system all need to be checked. It's been engineered so that it wears in their favor. Theres nothing left over for the shade tree mechanic to work with...without spending big bucks. He won't be driving in a few more years. Fred OH

hello, .. well, the clutch fluid level is ok. this truck had transmission repair at 138,308 miles which included: replace input shaft & main cluster shaft & synchronizer gear (used) also, replaced thrust bearing & input main bearing (new) and replace fluid & front seal. i copied this info. off of my receipt. dated 10-29-03 for $1,093.00. i have drove it 11,630 miles since. 1 will contact this transmission shop tommorow morning when they open. 3/4 ths. of this 11,630 was hi-way mileage and was not pulling a trailer.what are your thoughts on this ? warranty may be 12,000 miles -dont know for sure till tommorow. thanks again, chainsaw

As others have said it is a hydraulic actuated clutch with no adjustment. Its probably low in fluid but if it is, you have a leak. Replace both the master and slave cylinder at the same time. I used to work on a fleet of GM trucks and had a fair amount of problems with them if not repaired correctly the first time. They are very dependable otherwise. You could have a clutch problem but it usually is a slipping problem.

When you get ready to bleed the slave cylinder, take it loose from the bell housing and hold the bleeder screw end up to get all the air out and then re-install it.

Hope this helps.

Tommy

My 96 S-10 did the same thing. I figured with 110,000 miles the clutch was gone. The local repair shop topped off the clutch hydraulic cylinder with fluid and cured the problem. Check it out!!!

You may have a leaky clutch or master cyl. Are you losing any fluid. You could have air in the system also. You may have a clutch plate that is sticking or stuck to the flywheel. Very rare, but seen it happen if the plate is contaminated with oil or anti-freeze from a rear freeze plug.

That is a hydraulic clutch with no adjustment. Sounds like you have a failed pilot bearing so or a binding disc so it's time to bite the bullet and do a clutch job. You didn't say how many miles on it?
