Question for Jeff: McCulloch Pro Mac 650

I read a post from back in May from a person named Jeff discussing chain saws. Jeff specifically mentioned Mac 610 and 650 saws. I just bought a really nice Pro Mac 650 today at an auction. It starts and runs great, but I'm concerned about 2 things mentioned in the manual. One is that the manual says to use only regular gas (not unleaded). That's a tough thing to find anymore around here.

The other is that the manual says to mix 40:1 with Mcculloch's 2 cycle oil or 20:1 with any other "quality" 2 cycle oil. I doubt if I can find Mcculloch oil, but we run 32:1 with our Homelites. What would you recommend? Thanks for any help with these questions.

I was out doing yard work today and had to cut some roots from a yard tree with my 650! Great saw is it not? Use the sticky chain oil in it and try out one of those chisel chians. They work dang good. I use stihl or Echo with stabil and I think it is 40/1 or can be 32/1. They come in those cute little bottles at the store for a little over $1.oo.If you make it too much more the saw starts to smoke. This will really smoke you out and start to fowl the plug. I DO NOT LIKE OTHER MIXES !!!!Stuff for lawnmowers or boats ETC. The old books say 40/1 and that is how I mix it. Between saws and wackers I can do one or two gallons a week. I don't do tree service. Just do stuff for me and some neighbors. After the mix is two weeks old it goes into the lawn mower and I mix fresh. If you are not running the saw for a month dump the gas and start the saw to run out the fuel system.
Dug the septic system with a huge CASE 4WD bucket and backhoe. Good lord I have ruts all over the yard from the weight of this machine. He pulled out every stump with one big "KERUNNNNCH". Had to cut roots and branches all over. Dirt from the back field and pull a 8x10ft piece of chainlink fence with a couple of cement blocks on it. Smoooooth as a golf green. If you need any more info let me know. I now have SIX 650s thanks to Ebay. LOVE THEM Jeff

Thanks for your notes T_Bone and Jeff. The Mac really impresses me. I grew up running the small Homelites (which always did fine for what they were) so having this much power amazes me! Best $40 I've ever spent on a saw!

If that saw is all complete and nothing broken you STOLE the saw. You may want to take an air hose the next time you have the bar cover off and blow every thing out real good. To take off the other side . First remove the recoil unit.There are four metric screws. Next are the four BIG screws that hold on the side tank. Three up front and one in the back. All four are different so look real careful! Back is a little one with flat head. Along the front is long on top, middle is middle and bottom is the short cone shape.Take off the air cover and with care remove the fuel line.If you need a new gas cap an ECHO cap from Depot is only $4.oo and works fine. I took one saw apart and the only thing that could move was the fly wheel. The whole saw was chock solid full of crud. These saws work MUCH better when they are clean and air can get to the cooling fins. The neighbor across the street is a nervus nellie and had the tree service take down two huge button woods. These trees were 48 years old and perfectly clear and clean! He didn't like leafs in his gutters. NO KIDDIN!!! When the tree guy did the stump, me and next door go enough mulch to do all of our flower beds! What a cryin shame! He had to pay about $2000,oo TOO. Jeff

A regular unleaded 32:1 mix will work fine in your saw. The 2 cycle oils werent as developed then as now so they reccomended you run more oil if you didnt use the Mac oil. But any modern oil will do fine at 32:1.

Hi Zim,

I bought a new Pro Mac 610 in 1980. I've been using unleaded with 32:1 to 40:1. 25:1 smokes too much. Great little saw that cuts 4 to 5 cords every year.
