I need a new 14.4v battery for my Dewalt drill. Has anyone tried the replacement batteries such as the Powertron battery? Are they worth the bucks?

Thanks...David

I tried the freezer gig, did not work for me. Here is what I do. 1. Charge it up normal.
2. Use the battery a little bit to take the edge off.
3. Take a volt msmt with a DVM. This voltage divided by 1.2 is the number of good cells you have. 4. Take battery pack apart and start id'ing dead cells. Clip jumpers with diagonal cutters to remove the kaput ones.
5. Solder in new cells from a donor battery.
6 Reassemble battery pack.

Don't know about Powertron, but there was a thread on one of the forums a few weeks ago stating that putting a rechargeable battery in a freezer for 3 or 4 days, would bring many weak ones back to life. Haven't had any reason to try it myself, but 3 or 4 people said they tried it and it worked.

Could someone point me to the forum discussion about putting your rechargeable tool batteries in the freezer. I'd like to try that on several that I have.
thanks,
stephen

Steven, the freeze method is an attempt to prolong the life of ni-cad batteries. It may have something to do with canceling the faulty memory inherent to improper use/charge cycle. It may also break a whisker short with-in a cell but you can do that sometimes by dropping the battery pack a few feet onto a hard surface.

The freeze method as I understand it (1) discharge the battery pack fully (2) Freeze until the temperature is stable throughout (3) thaw until the temperature is stable with ambient throughout (4) charge as recommended new, minimum 12 hours.

I have done 2, definite improvement but they are not as new. Long term, no clue.

Joe

It's been 2 or 3 months, but i think it was on this forum. What the procedure amounted to was leaving the battery in a freezer a few days (3 or 4, I think), letting it thaw good, then recharging and using.
