Anybody know much about these trucks? I am eighteen and this is my first truck i bought the other day for 600$ I have already put in a water pump, and a partial tune-up. It runs real good and it seems to be mechanically sound. I got to do rear brakes and shocks in coming months, but all in all a nice truck. So were these chevys good trucks? Any ideas if it will make me a decent truck?? Basically, whats your opinion on these trucks??
Thanks guys! chris

Keep an eye on the intake, they leak coolant into the oil and destroy the bearing's.I bought a blazer with a blown 2.8 and was installing a rebuilt motor and had to also replace the intake because it was pitted badly. After that it was a great little truck intill the auto tran's went.I sold to my neighbor very cheap.I hear that the 4.3 is the good one.My company van had a 4.3 and it was great,a lot of power. The 2.8 is a real dog.

I have had several 2.8 engines in trucks,, they are ok,, but small,, I bought a S10 with the 4.3 and loved it, 2.8 is about like a 4cyl,, works ok, but not a lot of power...Jim

I bought a new one in 84. 2.8 4X4. Ran it well over 100,000. Had a leaky head gasket when I sold it. Yes the rear mains are something else, but not really to hard to replace (on a 4x4) Another thing is if it by chance has the mechanical push/pull type fuel pump. (mine did) The return springs in these are bad about breaking and believe me, changing that plunger type pump is no fun. They must no doubt put in on the engine before the engine was installed. I plugged mine at the block and installed an electric pump. Also if it is a 4x4, the shift on the run had problems with the engaging diaphram. There was a TSB on this problem.

Chris
I have owned two S-10's and one S-15. I still have a 1996 S-10 and the S-15[GMC]is a 2004. My first S-10 was a 1985 four cylinder. I used it for 165,000mi before I sold it. I changed oil every 2500 miles and bought one wiper motor for it. Except for tire's and brakes that was all I ever had to do to it. The 1996 is still with me. It has 117,000 showing and is still going to work every day. It is also a four banger. So far it has needed an altenator, wiper motor and an oxygen sensor. The GMC is a four cylinder also but with a lot of extra bell's and whistles that the other two did not have. Hope it will be as good as #1 and #2.
The V6 engine you have is a good little motor. Consider the age and use of the engine in your truck. It's passed new for sure but if it was kept up it may run another 100,000 miles.
I was on the pilot program team in Pontiac Michigan where the S-10 and S-15 were born. I worked 30 years for the truck and coach divison of GM. I use my S-10 everyday in a business I started after I retired from GM. The little truck is still going strong but the old man driving it is about wore out.

I bought an '82 S15 back around '87 for $2750. It had about 58,000 miles on it. Same eng. and trans. as yours. I drove it until '94, sold it for $2550 with over 140,000 miles on it. It was still a good solid truck with very few problems. I just outgrew it and needed a fullsize pickup. I wish I still had that S15 today.

If you take care of yours, it should last you a long time. The only real problem on the 2.8's was they are notorious for rear main seals leaking oil. Other than that, I never had any trouble with mine.

I had an 86 with the 2.8, but with an automatic was a little short of power, everywhere. One very important problem with the 2.8 was a leaking intake manifold gasket. The gasket will split and leak antifreeze into the oil, have repaired two besides my own, and two we had to junk because a little bit of antifreeze with destroy oil lubrication qualities and they ruined the crankshaft. I would have a mechanic you trust inspect the engine to see if the gaskets have been redone. Hey, for 600 bucks, enjoy it.

If the gasket didn't fail then the manifold would crack near the EGR valve dumping coolant into the crankcase with the same result.

GM has a 3.4 L crate engine to bolt in when the 2.8L fails. Can't find cranks for 2.8's. Watch out for body rust, it will eat a 94 or earlier alive. Center of gravity was a little high and the wheel track too narrow. Don't roll it while ripping around.
