I have a 1988 Eldorado that die's intermittently,no bucking. You can be doing 50 and then it will cut out.Pull over to the side of the road and it will start back up.I changed the ignition module but that was not it.My mechanic said it must stay dead, any idea's?

Happened to me also !@??$$$$$$$$
Mechanic replaced fuel pump, and coil pack, I replaced the battery and cleaned the grounds and the fault went away as quickly as it appeared. I think it was some part of the wiring harness but it could have been gremlins! All else equal, I would start by replacing the engine to firewall ground strap and on my car there is one other ground from the alternator to the block. On older vehicles these can rust/fail. Good luck.

I had an '77 Toronado that did that. Turned out to be the distributor. The mechanical advance weights would get stuck in a certain position which would throw the timing off and shut off the engine. A new distributor solved the problem.

Sometimes it's the simple things. The filler cap must be tightened until it ratchets or the vehicle will do exactly as you say it is doing. May not be it but worth a try. My two cents aren't worth spit.

John: I think Irv is on the right track, I had the same problem on my Buick, go down the highway and all of a sudden, it would quit, no warning and you had to "muscle" it over to the roadside, then shortly thereafter, it would start up and run fine...turns out it was a faulty sensor that protected the engine from damage !! Dealer replaced it promptly..end of problem. (P.S., it was also a 1988 model) LOL Jim

This sounds very simular to a problem I had with a 86 Pontiac. The coolant sensor had gone bad. By shorting out, it shut the engine off. But your mechanic should run the dianostics! Irv

Find a new mechanic, his excuse is as lame as they get.

A real mechanic will read the codes, if any, and using the service manual, will run the diagnostic tree.

If you're lucky it may be a clogged up fuel filter
Get another fuel filter and check the old one. ON a good filter you should be able to blow through it with no resistance.

Inside the gas tank there is a filter called a screen and you should be able to clean that. If you have to go into the gas tank go ahead and check that fuel lines and make sure they are clean
