Hello,

I recently purchased a new Delta jointer and a Dewalt 12 1/2" planer. I am now looking to buy a shaper and power feeder so I can tounge & groove as well as make different molding/trim. I'm really not doing this for a living, but right now have about 300 1X6 X 16' Pine to turn into something useable for my own use. My question; Who makes a good shaper and who does not? Thanks

Get at least a 3/4" spindle and at least 3 "honest" hp!!!! That means it has to run on 220V and draw at least 15 amps on 220V. I like industrials tools, and my shaper is an older Delta. Some like Grizzly tools, but others complain of poor service, and say, once it's broke or wore out, they use "nonstandard" parts in them. That means looking for something spl., and probably only from Grizzly. Same with Jet and all the Tiwian/China tools. (keep in mind Delta and other American brands, have cheaper tools made in Tiwian/China too) I think i'd buy an industrial Delta, and then sell it when i'm done. At least Delta will hold it's value better. Keep in mind, proper tooling isn't cheap either!! So, another option might be to take your lumber to a cabinet shop, and have them run it through "there" shaper for you. CJ

Hey CJ,
You might want to re-examine the "quality" you're getting from Delta these days... they've moved the lion's share of their manufacturing operations to China... trying to move more all the time! Now, the real quality comes from Taiwan. I work for one of the largest woodworking machinery retailers in the nation (mail order & internet) and we do our best to KNOW what the competition is up to! It's depressing to see the "bean counters" ruin ANOTHER company, but, it seems that's the way Delta (and others) is going!

Thanks for all the info. I would much rather buy American tools, but like most things they all seem to be made in China, or somewhere over there. Where is Delta made now?

I do not plan on selling it and would like to buy the best made shaper and power feeder.

That's why i said the "industrial" line. As i stated in my last post, Delta is "also" makeing tools in Tiwan/China. The "good stuff" is expensive, but if you want it, it's available. One thing about Delta, at least down the road you'll have a better chance of finding parts, no matter where they had it made. CJ

Hey Mark,
If you're looking for a shaper to do some real work, I'd look for one with at least a 3hp motor. A machine of this size has enough power to get the job done! There are a number of quality machines on the market... the company I work for sells a 3hp shaper with or without a sliding table... price is $1195 (without slider) or $1495 with. Good machines! (if interested, see sku# 803274/ woodworker.com) I've used Delta (and others) 1 1/2 hp shapers... none seem to have enough power (or rigidity) to do a very good job... seem to me to be a waste of money! If you really don't want to spend the money for a 3hp shaper, you'd be MUCH better off buying a QUALITY 3hp router, such as a Porter Cable Speedmatic, and a good router table. Probably cost about the same as a 1 1/2 hp shaper, but much more power & more useful! HTH

Mark: Jet make a two very good shapers, model JWS-18HO a 1HP model, or JWS-22CS 1-1/2 HP with a closed stand, they will cost you about $599 to $799. Both units have 3/4" spindle so that you can handle most shaper bits.See link below at jet's web site. Good luck

Can't recommend a brand, but get one with at least a 3/4 inch spindle. Cheaper ones have 1/2 inch but they aren't rigid enough to give a good cut.

Pull the covers on the Delta 12-1/2" planer once in awhile and check the drive systems. The nut on the end of the cutterhead shaft came loose on mine and the aluminum multi-groove pulley wallowed out until it broke the belt. Waiting for new parts now.

Depends on how much money you want to throw at it. Jet and Grizzly are pretty good names and relatively moderately priced.

Avoid Craftsman, here in Pa, Grizzly just opened a new retail store that got everything. I looked at their shapers, good variety to choose from. Catalogs are free.
