Air Compressor regulator switch night mare

A friend gave me a sears air compressor. When I turn the switch to the "on" position it starts and fills the tank.
When I turn the switch to the "off" position the air leaks out of the "needle valve" that shuts the unit regulator off automatically.

The problem is the "boneheads" at sears can't find the part on the schematic on the computer screen. I have gone to the service center twice, once to order and once to take back the wrong part entirely and to reorder again.

Initially when I went there, the clerks didn't know apples from oranges about what I wanted and finally had to get the manager who had some inkling of what I wanted after we went over to some units on the floor for comparison.. Get this - I initially asked the clerk when I realized she didn't know squat -- if there was a repair person in the back that could identify the part. Her answer was no, we send all repairs across town. I then aked if she could call over there and talk to a repairman and her response was "no". Could I go over there- "no, it is a secret location" was her response. This is true!

Ok, I go home and get on the phone and the computer and get the clerk on the other end and she is no quite sure about what is on the screen either, but finally finds and orders some components of the part I need but the "needle valve part" is still not on the radar screen. I can't be the only one that is this country that has needed this part.

I even went to the napa store but they couldn't order the part but came close to the name of it as it helped the sears clerk the second time on the phone.

It has been over a month and still no "tank of air".

Is the thing supposed to bleed down in the off position?

What is the correct name of the needle valve part?

Thanks for your input!

Most compressors bleed off the air in the cylinders to make it easier for the motor to get everything spinning. The needle valve is not the problem, its doing what it is supposed to do. There should be a check valve of some sort somewhere between the tank and the pump. It may even be a reed valve in the cylinder its self. See if you can find anything about a check valve on the schematics.

JD720 is right the tank check valve is leaking an allowing the compressed air from the tank back through the compressor and the unloader circuit. The valve should look somethning like this:

That is not the check valve in most craftsman compressors. Most have a check valve that when screwed in to the manifold all you see is a large nut that the input line attaches to. Most Sears aircompressors are made by Speed Air.. Therefore You can get the check valve for a Speed air compressor.

You might be better off looking up "air compressors" in your local Yellow Pages. One of the shops can probably come up with valve, maybe not exactly the same but one that will work. The problem with Sears is they put stuff out on bid for manufacture, and if the compressor is over 3-4 years old, that could be 6 or 7 manufactures ago.Local shop near me does their service work, and they have ,lawnmowers, weedeaters, and other equipment piled on top of each other, waiting on parts that are either backordered for months on end,or "temporarily out of stock".I guess Sears hopes the owners go back and buy another one, rather on wait for the parts or repairs.

Check Valve. I bought a junk compressor that has a similar problem. It ran my air nailer until I shingled the roof, then died. Don't care for Craftsman stuff.

Did you go on the Sears website? They have parts diagrams for most anything they sell. If they have your compressor, you can find the part easier youself, then wait on the lame store clerk.

Have gone to the web site and found the schematic but can't find the needle valve. Have looked on both schematics for the unit and the parts list. They sent me parts of the valve but not the needle part. It is not on the schematic. The model # for the sears compressor is 919155731.

Looks to me like the check valve is part no 26 on the diagram, right between the tank and pipe from pump.It may be a simple ball check valve, might just need cleaning(before spending and money)

You are right. Took it out and cleaned it and seems to be holding pressure. Thanks a million.
