Hydraulic Hose Crimper

Can anyone offer advice on using a Parker hydraulic hose crimper? I'd like to know the proper way to crimp the fitting on the hose and how to tell if you have squeezed it enough. This is an older model machine picked up at an auction. The local shop has a machine with a digital gauge and they just squeeze until it reaches the right pressure. I have no experience with making hydraulic hoses. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Brokenwrench is correct, you will most definitely need brand-specific hose and fittings.

I would contact Parker or a Parker distributor and see if they can get you the chart for your machine,siince I assume you don't have one. The older Parker machines used a 2 sided stepped ring over the jaws which are bottomed out fully to set the fitting.Which side of of the ring and the type/size of fitting used is checked on the chart and this combination determines the crimp.Also depending on the machine,you might be limited to a certain brand/type of fittings and hose that can be used so the fittings are not over/under crimped.

More info, After some cleaning i found it is a Parkrimp model 80c - 80. There is a decal on the side that indicates differant color dies for differant sizes. The riddle so far is they mention 3 differant series #'s on this decal. I dont know what the series # mean. The dies are in boxes with parts #'s and dated 1983 and show a picture of how to feed the hose in from the bottom and put your fitting against a step ring in the bottom of the die. Next question where are the large washer type rings used--on top of die? Your both right, i need to talk to parker and see if i can get an operators book on this 20 year old machine. I tried their website but not too much info there on 20 year old crimp machines, and not to friendly to a novice. If anyone can expand now that i have a model number please do and thanks again.

The stepped washer goes on top of the dies.It's position,step up or step down,is determined by the chart.To make a crimp the dies are bottomed completely and the pump should start to strain some,and then is released.Probably on that machine,you are limited to using Parker fittings and hose which may or may not still be available,as some types are now obsolete. I used to have one,probably the same vintage,but as the fitting supply dried up,I traded up to an Aeroquip machine.

After looking at it, i see what your explaining. I may be stuck with 100 ft of 3/8 and 1/2 hose and fittings i can't crimp. There's no brand on the hose, just sae 1000 R2 AT which i'm guessing is the type--double wire hydraulic, 4000 psi max. The fittings have a part # on them but no brand either.

I have tracked down the hose and fittings I have. They are sold on the web by Link I contacted them and they say they will work in the Parkrimp model 80c-80 and that Parker bought out Dayco about 2 years ago. They're selling them on ebay too and claim they are compatible with Weatherhead, Dayco and Aeroquip in their ad. As an experienced hose man, what do you think? Is it a good or bad idea to use other brands? Also, the machine has a Weatherhead conversion kit cone shaped spacer but the dies all appear to be Parker. I can't see how it could be used for Weatherhead fittings unless you have the dies too. Since it was an auction item, I'm thinking they may have kept the Weatherhead dies. Appreciate any input.
