hydraulic starter OT

I saw a welder on eBay a couple years ago that was diesel engine but it had a hydraulic starter. It had a pump that you built up pressure with, then opened a valve that released pressure to a hyd motor that spun the engine to start it. That seemed so economical and trouble free to me. I don't understand why this wasn't more popular and integrated into diesel tractors etc. NO batteries to maintain, no alt to maintain, no electric starter motor to maintain, wiring etc. It just seems the hyd motor would be more durable and last many times longer. Anyone seen hyd starters or have experience with them?

I ran an oil field refrac unit powered by Cummins kvtt 16, 1600 hp, it had a hydraulic starter,powered by a pto driven pump from a 400 hp Cummins engine in the truck pulling the rig.

I haven't used a hydraulic starter, but we used to have an International semi tractor with an air starter. It had a very large air tank that gave you about three seconds of cranking. It spun the 8V-71 Detroit so fast that if it was going to start it would. We ended up mounting a gasoline-powered air compressor on it for those days when you were miles from the nearest air hose and it didn't start on the first try. It was very loud, like an impact wrench, and would scare the hell out of anybody walking by when you hit the starter.

Yeah, hydraulic starters are pretty much standard equipment for emergency diesel generators in ships. The disadvantage in portable equipment is the accumulator(s) are very heavy, require space, and maintenance of the nitrogen charge. Also the cost of the starter and system is about 4 times that of electric.
