On my CASE 310B the lock nut on the cylinder shaft is stuck, the only way to hold the shaft is a slot in the end of the shaft and it's been deformed from previous efforts (from previous owners) to remove it. The Bushings are gone (any idea where to get these?) is the reason I am attempting to remove ths nut, to take out the 2" of play in the shaft. Makes it kind of squirrely to drive. TIA

Regards, Rick from Paso.

Hi Rick,
Can you access the rod when extended?
I have no experience with this tractor. If you can get to it Measure the diameter of the rod and take two pieces of board and drill a hole where each half of the hole will be in each piece of board. This will provide you with a means of holding the rod without damaging the chrome on the cylinder rod. Use a clamp of somekind c clamp will work if you cant take enough off to get it to vise. If the rod turns in the boards make sure the oi is cleaned off and is dry. If you need more grip get some powdered rosin like baseball pitchers use to coat inside of boards oak works best for boards.
Good wrenching and let us know how you come out.
Scott

Oh Well, I finally dremeled the nut almost through on top and bottom and wacked it with a chisel. Broke it in half. Not elegant, a bit brutal but it was quick and it worked.

I am not familiar with your specifice problem but when I have a bearing race or a sleeve that I cannot get off using convential means I do the following. On the outer diameter of the part that I want to remove I weld a continuous bead completely around item and let is cool. This causes the item to expand but it cannot contract to its original size due to the weld bead. Normally it does not take a lot of effort to remove the piece once cooled. A hammer and chisel should knock the nut loose after the above procedure. Obviously you will have to get a new nut.
