Interesting thing happened yesterday. While using my gas Ryobi weed eater, the blade/head stopped turning. The engine starts fine, but I can not cut anything because the blade does not turn. Please help - any suggestions?

If you are using split shaft ryobi, it might have seperated a little at the connector. Check to make sure the engine is all the way on the shaft. check to make sure the head at the bottom has not slipped a little. if these 2 are in their coorrect position, then you need a new drive shaft. A ryobi is not designed to run a blade if that is what you were using. Unfortunatly, unless you can fix it your self, normally you can buy a new trimmer cheaper than having it fixed, unless it is one the higher priced straight shaft.

Could be you stripped the gears in the head.

thank you both for your comments. i assume the next step for me is to take it to a repair shop....unless you know of a way for me to diagnose this myself.

Thanks again

Jason: I don't know your level of mechanical aptitude, but these are not exactly jet turbines. Typically there's a couple of screws holding the shaft on at each end. Pull these and you should be able to see if the shaft is broken--they usually come right out. Typically they have a square shank each end and a flexible shaft. If the ends are rounded off, or if the shaft is snapped, then you've found your problem. If not, you may have to dig deeper--if it's a geared-head model, these might be stripped. Also, the clutch could be broken--usually something else breaks first, but it's not unheard-of for the clutch to break.

Sounds like you broke the driveshaft.
