How much of a generator does a guy need to run a Lincoln 225 amp buzz box.

I can run my 225 ac/dc lincoln welder off my 8kw generator reasonably well. I have not tried it above 1/8 rods and about 90 amps, but it handled it o.k. then.

Doug: It depends on whom you listen to. Lincoln recommends no less than 15,000 watts, as the energy necessary to properly start an arc is too high for most smaller generators to keep up with, and the transformer on a buzzbox are not optimized nor efficient enough to operate with a smaller generator. However, others on this board have claimed that they run their Lincolns off from a 5,000 watt generator successfully. Obviously you're not going to get full amperage, but if you're doing fairly common welding (3/32 or 1/8 rod and it's not for a critical application) you may want to try it and see if it works for you.

If you can find a big old set of power factor correction capacitors that draw 10.0 amps on 240vac. Then a 5000W can squeak by suprising well with 1/8th rods. Otherwise yes, a 15Kw and up generator is required.

I weld at times with a miller thunderbolt(AC/DC machine) and a 6500 watt generator - 1/8" rod. If I were to buy a generator for the sole purpose of running that machine remote I'd look for a minimum of 12kw and I'd try it out before buying to make sure the combo worked for me.
