Well, three or four months ago, someone by the name of Wayne posted a message on this board about a sale on Ebay for a set of tools called Swenchs. A Swench is a hand operated impact tool made by Curtis-Wright Aircraft Corp. It looks like an overgrown ratchet with a square drive sticking out both sides of the head.

You pull on the handle againist a cam and spring and after about 30 degrees of movement something inside trips and the tool impact drives the socket. You can keep pulling for more impacts or push back and pull ratchet style.

Well, I didn't get the ones that were for sale on Ebay at that time but since them I have made it my mission to locate and purchase 1/2, 3/4 and 1" square drive swenches.

I finally got to use the 3/4 drive the other day and it works extremely well. I was removing the blades off a bush-hog and the nuts are on top, accessable thru a hole in the deck. Trouble is, they put the hole directly under the input to the gearbox, so its impossible to get an impact on it, and the threads were rusted. Couldn't budge them with a 3/4 drive breaker bar.

I fitted the socket 1 5/8" on the nut and then just managed to get the swench under the gearbox input. The nut was heavily rusted but about three hits of the Swench and it was turning. Got them off, sharpened the blades, wireburshed the threads, nuts, etc., and removed the mass of bailing twine that had jammed the blades from swinging freely.

Put it all together with antiseeze on the threads and used the Swench to put the final tighen on them.

Thanks to Wayne, I had the forsight to buy a rare and useful tool.

The set that was on Ebay that Wayne initially talked of went for $309 and was worth much more given the number of sockets that came with it.

I set up a search on Ebay for "swench" (no quote marks) and set the search to run for one year. Every time something with "swench" in the title came up for sale, I got an email. First I got a 3/4 drive, then a brand new 1/2 drive in the original metal box, and finally a 1" drive monster. Now I need to acqurire 3/4 and 1" impact sockets.

I've been buying 3/4 drive stuff on Ebay when I can get it right, and I've gotten lucky on some really good stuff (I only look at name brand American made, mostly Williams, but will consider others such as Proto, etc.). Of course, some stuff goes outa sight and I never bother to bid, but if it ends during the day, on a weekday, or is poorly described most people won't bother with it.

That is how I got my hydraulic press, ended on a Tuesday at 10AM, manufacturers name mispelled, listed as a 10 ton when it really was a 25 ton (and I knew it) and the seller wasn't willing to palletize for shipping (pickup only) and I was willing to drive the distance to get it.

Hey Charles, I've got nearly 100 1" drive impact sockets and a few 3/4 drives if your interested. I've alredy sold a few to some friends so I'd have to go through and make sure of what all I've got left size wise but that isn't a problem sinceI was getting ready to list them on Ebay and was gonna have to do it anyway. If your interested in any of them let me know and maybe we can work something out. I'd rather cut a few dollars off what I'm gonna ask on there and know their sold than to spend the time and money to list them all. My Email is [email protected].

Hey Davis, I looked for a long time before I found the Swench set I have, and never saw anybody else making anything even remotely similar. The ones on Ebay were listed by MOLINESTUD I know you can get one for full price through CAT, it's listed in their tool book, but I don't remember wether it's a 3/4 or a 1" drive.
There is place off of I85 down toward Gastonia that sells surplus tools from various places including the government. I know when they were in their old place they had several sets, but that was well over a year ago. I haven't been to their new place down there but I've been told it is on the same exit as the gun shop who's sign you can see (at least you could last time I was through there) from the interstate. Good luck finding one, they are a great tool to have.
