Hi Tommy,

Only buy a scroll compressor with copper coils (if possible), NEVER buy a radial compressor of any type. Other than that most home owner systems use commom componets.

To make the high pressure systems work, cost alot of fan juice each month. More energy efficient to use common duct work as it's a one time cost VS electricity to run a HP fan motor.

Just paid $4200 last May, 2003, for a new Comfortmaker furnace and 1.5 ton AC forced air unit. That included the installation with a new chimney liner. It is much quieter than the old Bryant which it replaced. I got a scratch and dent unit from the local supplier. Wouldn't waste the money on a window unit unless there are no alternatives.

Central air beats a couple of window units hands down in efficiency, effectiveness, comfort, price and control. Gotta laugh at the people who run the AC full blast all day, then open the windows at night. They just let the humidity back into the house they paid all day to remove. And the next day the when running the AC, the temps maybe cool but the high humidity will make the air feel uncomfortable.

Central air is nice! We got a couple of estimates and around New England for an existing colonial house and they run about $8000 to $10,000 to get it installed. Being an former sheet metal guy, I figured I could do the duct work, but I don't want a whole lot of ducts running thru the cellar, closets, etc. I hear they got high velocity systems that use 2 inch ducts. Know anything about how good these are?

Hmmmmm mmmmm m, no duct work. Looks like adding a run across the basement ceiling and on the attic floor. The high velocity sytems are something I've never tinkered with. Those "through the wall" units work well. Quiet, high capacity and look respectable.

I was in at a Walmart store the other day. They were have ing a sale on window a/c"s. $99.00 for a 6,000 btu. Also Lowe's has good prices.

These prices are cheaper than I can purchase them wholesale. Quantity, I guess.
