We're happy with the leyland cyprus. They are evergreen, grow fast, grow together, grow tall and are soft to the touch and easy to prune...

I think the jury is still out on Aus trees. They have been planted in this area for about 10 years. Very fast growing, in 2-3 years you have some large trees. However, the saying goes "fast to grow, fast to die" or something like that. Maybe 20 years is a typical life span (not sure anyone knows yet), they are suseptible to borers, some think that is the reason for the short life span. If you live long enough, you will have a bunch of dead trees to remove and no wind break or privacy fence. At the least, plant some slow growing "normal" trees for your area at the same time.

Thats one aspect of rual living nobody talks about. If I had a privacy fence up, my neighbors would go nuts trying to look inside to see what I was doing. Wait a minute, where do I get these trees???-mike

Hey there guys. Try BAMBOO if you realy want something to keep out kids, dogs, cats ,tigers, elephants, ETC. A very nice hedge that takes a few years but is very pretty is white pine. Plant them about 10' apart and in ten years they look great. Also in the wind they whisper! The bamboo takes about five years and MUST be controled. If you can mow on both sides in the spring time you can cut down the new growth. The first of May around South Jersey. I have some on the edge of the garden and this year it shot up eight feet in about one week. If it is in damp soil and well establised it will hit 20 feet a year! Try the white pine. Jeff

Planted Aussi trees, they are a willow tree and the leaves are very narrow and didn't give much cover. They are starting to dye out and are about ten years old. Planted poplar they are much better cover but the roots are near the surface and grow out of the ground. They arn't very good in a lawn because of the roots.

Keep 'em watered well and they do fine. Neighbor got some about three years ago, the trees grow fast with just a bit of care. Once they have established themselves, come pruning time stick the cuttings in damp ground or a bucket of water and you'll have starts from almost every one of them. You might check if those poplar hybrids can be had in your area. They also grow fast and with a bit of pruning will bush out enough for a decent privacy thicket. OR for more privacy/security grow a Blackberry hedge around the place.

I used poplars before and succombed to "Cotton Root Rot" and "Borer Beedles".

This time I used locally growing cedars....go out and dig em up. Have about 160 trees now and they are extremely hardy and grow fast too. Very nice looking fence.

thanks for the responce,i don't think i would care to use this tree, if it is similar to a willow. willows have a tendency to be very brittle and break easily.
