Im trying to lossen a front pivot pin bolt from a 335 Tractor....We used a 3/4 impact gun...Heated it and all,it still wouldnt come loose...My question is if i rent a 1 inch torque gun what kind of psi will i need??( do we rent a pull behind compressor)...And will this 1 inch wrench give much more torque or are we wasting our time and money even renting the tool.

Maybe a one inch socket with a cheater bar, with a tractor loader for a little down pressure, and then start heating it. Watch out in case something flies though, you would have a lot of power there if something broke in the wrong place or richocheted.

what size/length air hose are you running?? 3/4" impact will respond well to 1/2" air hose and 1/4" will sometimes starve a 1/2" impact. to properly supply a 1" impact, i would say you need at least 60gal tank w/1/2" line to the tool. good luck. fred

Hey Wingnut, it's not the PSI you need to worry about, it's the CFM. Most impacts are designed to put out their rated torque capacity at 90 PSI, but even if you increase the PSI and don't have the CFM the wrench isn't gonna perform. If you look in the catalogs, most 1" drives show as being rated around 15CFM. Problem is that rating is for a 15 second run time. In other words if you hit the trigger for 15 seconds it's gonna use up 15 CFM, if you need to let it hammer for a full minute it's gonna use 60 CFM. That's most likely the problem your having with the 3/4 drive, not enough flow, since most home compressors are only in the 20-30CFM range. Try heating the housing the pin is screwed into and then squirting some water on the pin itself while avoiding the housing as much as possible. Often the shock of quick cooling the pin will help loosen up the threads. If that doesn't work, let it cool a little more then spray some good penetrant like PB Blaster on it and let it wick it's way in as it cools. Also as you hammer on it with the impact take a ball pien hammer and tap the housing around the pin threads. Again the shock will help them to loosen up. Like one of the other posts said, you might even be able to use a breaker bar with a section of cheater pipe on it. Like the piost said I've often broken things lose like that even when an impact wouldn't do the job. It never hurts to try. Good luck.

I work with this type situation regularly. Try this--With at least 120 lb. of air pressure, impact wrench well lubricated and a quality socket, hold the trigger on while rapidly forward and reversing the wrench. This back and forth motion will, most of the time, break it loose. When you use heat, are you heating the head or the threads?

I've sometimes rattled away w/o success with an impact wrench,only to find I could break it lose with a cheater bar.I don't personally believe a 1" is gonna do it,if a 3/4 didnt.Try BIG heat,GOOD penetrant.Make sure your wrench is oiled & opened up all the way if adjustable.Too small or long of hose can cut its efficiency also.

2nd thought:Are you sure the pin itself does pivot(not D shaped or keyed)?
