Several recent posts have suggested Graingers as a place to buy various tools. I called them and was told in no uncertain language that they only sell to the trades, that you must open an account as a business, and that they do not, under any circumstances, sell to indivduals.

What gives?

You're a business if you say you are. You can order online and pickup at the local store. The catalog is a wealth of information and available on CD-ROM.

I agree that Graingers is way over priced. I was looking for a heavy duty roll around cart for the farm. Graingers wanted $749.00 so I checked Northern Tool and got the same cart for $229.00. In my opinion don't waste your time or money.

Dollars against donuts there is a world of difference between the $749 Grainger and the $229 Northern.

W.W. Grainger is the world's largest distributor of industrial products and they buy at rock bottom
prices from mainly U.S. manufacturers. Some of that savings is kept as profit but some of their special pricing is passed on to their customers.

Northern does an excellent job, from what I hear, does a decent job of finding bargins, with much coming from Asia.

Apples to Apples, Grainger is hard to beat if you can buy from them, especially if you or your company buys a fair amount each year, earning discounts from their published prices.

Check out McMaster-Carr, pricing lately isn't nearly as outragous as it was in recent past. They don't advertise the brand in the catalogue but hand tools always show up too be Armstrong or equal. There also MSC supply 1-800-645-1270 whose catalog makes Graingers look small. MSC sells several different brands proto, williams, armstrong, wright, good stuff. Also msc like MacMaster doesn't give a rip who you are busiiness or d.i.y. they don't care. check it out..... beezer

Dean, I just tell them that I am with "Black Bayou Farms", call my order in, and pick it up at will-call. If I remember correctly they were looking for a tax id number to set up an account. I agree with Cal on their pricing. McMaster-Carr will take a credit card on line, and a better selection, just my opinion. Dave

Graingers is overpriced even for a business, can find comparable products from other sources at 2/3rds the price. just have to shop around.Place I work (state Agency) buys from grainger but McMasters and Carr who will sell retail has better prices. Blaines Farm and Fleet in Illinois has good products, good prices also. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yep. Graingers limits their customers to businesses.

So, find a friend who has a small business. Maybe your local dealer of whatever will be happy to help.

Or start one yourself.
