I am baffled as to how remove the engine pulley from my MTD 16.5 HP riding mower, when the engine shart simply turns when I pull the wrench to remove the bolt that holds the pulley on? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Thank you both very much! I will give the air ratchet a try first. Although the rope idea is ingenious, and if it worked, I would not have to by an air ratchet. Hmmm... Great ideas. Thanks!

The rope will work. However, if you don't already have an air ratchet, don't buy one just for this. An air ratchet is NOT an impact tool and will not give you any more torque than you can provide by hand.

As the other poster says, an impact wrench works great! The other way is to stuff a length of cotton clothesline rope into the cylinder, through the spark plug hole, being carefull to leave a "tale" stick out for removal later.

The piston comes up against the wad of rope, and jams, holding hte crankshft.

An impact wrench will usually do it.
