My farm has several barn cats who think our flower beds are their personal bathrooms. Anyone know of any good methods to make the flower beds unattractive to the cats?

I found a repellent at Home Depot you sprinkle around the garden about once a week. It works really well. HTH, Glenn

I think the word "cat" should be banned from the forums. It only brings out the worst in people.
You are lucky you only got two psychos to respond.
I use the mouse/rat trap plan. I have to control where they go, but I can't imagine the place without them.

You must be one of those guys from town who keeps driving down my gravel road and dumping off your kids unwanted Easter pets. I have cats around the farm and would not have it any other way. On the other hand, Unwanted domestic animals are a REAL problem around here. I have rased pheasents and chuckers and quail, for 30 plus years. I turn them loose only to see that alot are not being harvested by hunters or enjoyed by the folks around here that just like seeing wildlife, but being consumed by some mange infected cat that you and your do gooding friends let loose in my world.
And yes, I am a PSYCHOS. And so am I.

Well....I live in a dump zone too and see my share of undernourished, flea infested, wormy, mangy, deranged, abused animals and I get rid of them as fast as I can. Not to protect wildlife, flowers or any other reason than..... ...I enjoy it. Also, cats around a "farm" are not necessity, they are a nuisance. When you have to get under a tractor to work on it and realize you are in cat dung, they all have to go QUICK. Besides a good chicken snake will eat more mice than any 3 cats. WHO NEEDS THEM????

Butcher, what a horrible, shocking suggestion. Why would you use a 22 pistol? A 12 guage sawed off shotgun is way more fun and makes far more mess. Plus it wipes those annoying weeds with colorful growths on top out as well.

Get some ground cayenne pepper. Sprinkle around perimeter. Shouldn't hurt flowers...BUT...be careful if you're working in or around said garden. That stuff really can do a number on your eyes and nose.

A strand of electric fence about 10-12 inches off the ground. That gets their attention :)

Had this problem with my strawberry patch. Did not help my apitite much. MOUSE TRAPS scares the living Hxxx out of them. When neibours dog got into act I added rat trap with bolonia bait. Tied the trap to stake with twine. This worked so good that I placed a mouse trap on kitchen sink to train my own cat. This worked so good that I can thaw hamberger on the counter with no worry. Had a boat covered with a tarp propped up to keep the water out on a slanted driveway. Transom was almost touching the ground and had a splash shield which was a perfect entry point for neighborhood cats.

Got tired of them stinking up the place with their "marking".

Got 4 rat traps and enlarged the trigger area with metal. Put 2 on each side of the engine.

In a couple of days, 2 of the traps were found in the yard with cat hair stuck in them..... end of problem.

Free fertilizer and you don't eat the flowers anyway.

Moth balls or flakes sprinkled near and around the flower beds will keep them away.

Go to "Organicgardening.com and check out the "over the fence" discussion under the community heading on the home page. if you can't find the answer in the search regester and post the question, you will get many good answers in a short while. and yup I live in a animal dump area too.
