How do you determine if an electric motor turns clock wise or counter clock wise, by looking into the shaft or looking at the motor from the fan end? A friend just called, and asks me. I think it is determined by looking into the shaft, but I cannot prove it in any of my books. Thanks for your input.

A very common term to use when referring to rotation of equipment[motors/diesels/etc] is to use; Drive end or Non drive end when viewing the shaft. example CCW non drive end= counterclockwise looking at the shaft that is not connected to the prime mover[source of rotating power], of the back end as some may say.
Hope i didn't add "confusion":)

Most motors I've used say viewed from the shaft end, and to change rotation you interchange wires 5 and 8.

I do not believe there is an industry-wide consensus on this. General Electric, for one, lists rotation viewing the motor from the back (opposite the shaft end), but others list rotation viewing the shaft end.

If your friend needs to order a motor, just tell him to spec. it "____ rotation, viewed from the shaft end", or "____ rotation viewed from the back end", which ever he is comfortable with, and a supplier should be to match up what he has from there.

Hi Bob,

In addition, many motors are reversible by changing the wiring contacts under the access plate. For such motors any standard "convention" for rotation would be inconclusive.
