what rod would you use to weild a manafold useing a AC weilder?

I'll go along with replacement. If you take the time to R&R for welding. Chances are it will give you a problem later on, just when you least expect it. Lot of those welds just wont hold up.

Mac,

I hope you are condeming arc weld as a cast repair, because oxy/acet weld done properly is a permanent repair. The added material is the same material as the manifold . It is easy to thicken a weak or thin spot to make a better than new repair.

There are typically two rods available at the welder supply. The Ni 99 has a higher nickel content and lower yield strength. It is best for small parts such as your manifold because it will tend to yield before the casting can crack if stresses get high. The Ni 55 is a higher strength material and is best suited for larger parts. Both work very well on AC. The preheat procedure one of the other guys suggested is good, the basic method is to weld a little and peen a lot, then repeat.

If it's on a running tractor where you can get to the crack just clean the area good with a wire brush and start the engine to preheat the manifold, shut motor down and then weld with some hi-nickel rod. Start engine to equalize temperature of manifold and you're finished. If you have the manifold off clean cracked area (don't use an abrasive wheel as this will impart impurities into the weld) and preheat evenly with a torch, weld and reheat with light peening around weld. Cover with sand and allow to cool.

To do a good job on a manifold , I would forget about the arc welder and get out the torch. Get some cast iron rod ( square rod that is cast iron in a stick) and a can of flux . Arc weld is the worst choice to weld cast , next best is brazing , and the best choice is oxy/acetylene cast iron weld . Here is a link to some cast iron repair and some other things .

They make a special cast iron rod, pretty common.
