I want to build a large steel rack for angle, channel, flat,(etc) but I would also like a slot in it to slide sheetsteel,(vertically) in as well. I have a bunch of 2" sched 40 pipe I would like to use. Open to any ideas. Thanks

Mine sets against the wall, and stores pieces vertically. The wall does NOT support all the weight, however. Essentially, it's a "L" shape, with the bottom of it out about 16" from the wall. Dividers make it easy to keep stuff sorted, and also brace the back support to the front of the bottom part. Nothing's going to fall unless I get very careless when taking something out of it.

I've seen lots of steel racks built out of 1" square tubing. I don't see why 2" pipe wouldn't work, as long as you get a good, solid weld joint. Gussets need to be under each "arm" for safety and strength. You can store sheet steel inside the "A" frames.

i agree on not using the pipe. once saw a steel rack made of 4"sch 40 with arms welded on like limbs of a tree. one day one of the upper arms pealed a tear in the pipe and cascaded down pealing the lower arms. if anyone had been between the racks, well it was like a rockslide only heaver. i like "a" framed racks built of channel with cross continous cross arms of channel. longer at bottom narrow at top so that loading with an overhead hoist is easer. just remember, tons and tons of steel will end up on the arms.

This is for a farm/hobby shop. I was thinking of having the limbs stick out 10"-12". It's basicly to keep my pile of steel,(tube, angle, flat) sorted and off the floor. I don't have a big stock. My reason for wanting to use the pipe is that I have enough laying around to make one. It will have good joints,(double cut 45 deg T joints).
