I just burned up my 1/2" dewalt regular chuck power drill, I used it for the heavy stuff like mixing concrete and paint with a mixing bit and drilling 1" diameter holes in wood timbers. I had it 5 years and it finally croaked. I am not really disappointed I gave it a lot of abuse. In your opinion what is the best regular chuck (not the SDS) 1/2" drill for under $200. what do you recommend. Milwaukee, Dewalt, Bosch, Hilti. Hilti is expensive though.

Hi Kurt,

Hilti T-17 is hard to beat.

I did use a Makita cordless one time that drilled 40, 1/2" red heads, on one charge. I borrowed it from the sparky's and there toolman said they had great luck with them holding up.

I had never seen a cordless hammerdrill before that. This was 12yrs ago so I have no idea what the new stuff is like.

I now have a Milwaukee, 1/2" hammer drill. While building my shop I burned up 2 B&D hammer drills. This Milwaukee has been used hard but not abused and continues to work well.

It could only be handier if it had a battery. For DIY projects and limited at home production work I would recommend it. Steer clear of the B&Ds as they have a tendency to burn up internally. Costs more to have one rebuilt than to buy new one hence I burned up two before I got my Milwaukee.

As I can afford it all my hand power tools will become Milwaukee - this drill made a believer out of me. For my efforts I do not need commercial grade tools like Hilti.

Hilti is the best.

Depends. If you're talking hammer/drill, Milwaukee is certainly a good name. If you're talking rotary hammer (different, won't chuck a regular drill, used strictly for masonry bits, points and chisels) then Hilti is king, closely followed by Kango. We rent Kangos at the shop, and if a tool will survive rental use, it'll survive about anything.

I used a Hilti for about 4 days on a job a few years back. The thing was unbelievably strong, and my hands didn't hurt at the end of the day like I thought they would. They ARE expensive, but you said "best" didn't you?

I would buy again, another Hilti. I got one in a pawn shop about 15 years ago, a smaller size one it only does a good bore 3/4 inch or smaller. Living on the rock I do it has gotten used a lot. At the factory I used to work at they had ONE millwakee when they expanded and it drilled thousands of holes for mounting machinery, some 1 1/2 bores, and was still going 16 years later.

Kurt: I bought one of the cheap $20 hammer drills from the Cummins travelling tool show, and definitely got my $20 out of it--in fact, it's still going strong 5 years later. However, it proved to me that a hammer drill was handy enough to be worth getting a decent one. I ended up with a Makita, and I've been very pleased. It has a keyless chuck, which will occasionally come loose if you're really pounding on it (large bits and deep holes) but it's been an excellent drill. Another name worth adding to your list is Metabo--their stuff isn't cheap, but I've been quite impressed with the Metabo hammer drill we have at work--it's been used extensively and has given excellent service.

I've had a milwaukee for over 20 years. I think I replaced the chuck one time in that period of time. It had plenty of use.

I have a Milwaukee, seems to me it was about $150. works good, used it some for drilling in a slab for anchor bolts for various things. Use it alot as a regular drill. I'm happy with it but haven't used it enough to abuse it either, and haven't had a chance to use anything else to compare it with.

My two cents worth.
