After the head is pulled what, in your opinion, is the best way to unstick a stuck block. What penetrant to use. Any particular procedure? All suggestions appreciated.

I have had excellent results with Kroil from Kano Labs in Nashville, TN. Kroil unstuck the cylinders in my '52 John Deere G. I put a gallon in it, let is set over the winter. The next spring I pulled the head, cleaned out the glop from the rh cylinder and put a pry bar between the starter nose cone and the flywheel. It broke loose with little effort. That tractor had been sitting out side for 15 years!

Hi dick, Vinegar does a great job of desolving rust. It leaves a black oxide that can be washed away. Thats provided the engine is stuck just because of rust. It could have been a bearing problem too so I always pop the rod and main caps loose.

Some people will suggest salt and vinegar but this causes steel etching and produces a off-gas of hydrogen gas. This will cause more problems and I suggest you don't use it!

Time seams to be the big factor no matter what you use on the rust.

I've had real good luck with PB Blaster. It's a terrific penetrant.

Good luck!

Oil, like the MMO mentioned, in the cylinders and lots of time. You use a wood block and a hammer and try to get the pistons to move by tapping them. Don't hit too hard. If it's a tractor you could try putting it in high gear and rocking the rear wheels. Or if you have a crank, try this: I heard of one guy who put a jack under the crank, and the weight of the tractor pushing down on the crank plus the oil in the cylinders soaking over a few weeks eventually turned the engine. Good luck. Be patient.

Although I have never tried this I have heard from more than one source that if you pour Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and let it set for a few days that seems to always work better than rust penetrants.
