OT-propane line repair on grill

An ederly widow neighbor I help out now and again around her place has a propane gas grill, one of her dogs chewed thru the line going to the side burner. It looks to me as if its just rubber hose, the problem is its got a brass crimp on the hose at the regulator and the burner valve instead of a threaded fitting. Can I just replace the hose and use hose clamps? I don't want to do anything that might cause a fire or explosion. A new crimped on replacement hose from the manufacturer will run her $55, she's on a tight budget and I'd like to find her a cheaper, but safe alternative. Thanks for any ideas.

Hello Will, You will find on the regulater a warning by the manufacturer not to replace hose only. I would not replace the hose unless you are insured well enough to accept full liability if something goes wrong. 25 years in propane bizz. DO NOT DO IT!!

That hose is available at Home Depot and Lowes. The hose is after the pressure regulator, as such the pressure is very low in the line.

I would, and have, made repairs as you describe with no ill effects.

Duct Tape and baling wire, I wouldn't trust hose clamps ;> Since the propane tank is pressurized, I don't think regular ol' rubber hose will work. Bite the bullet and buy the propane hose with installed fittings from the dealer.

55 $ is cheaper than a skin graft if it burns the h*** out of someone! I wouldn't.

Try a welding supply store,they should have hose and clamps. kjm

Around here many of the bulk LP suppliers do repairs and can replace the line at a reasonable price. It might be worth checking.

Understand the problem, but dont cheat on that type of repair. Best get a new assembly for it. Shop around a little and maybe you can save a couple bucks.

Hi will,

LP hose is a special hose rated for fuel gas. Yes they sell it in bulk but hose clamps are not approved and the cost of the raw hose is more than a trip to Camping World or Wal-Mart RV section for a new hose with the correct ferrel ends.

Another point, if you make any modifications other than whats approved by the mfg, then your libel for the damage it may cause so get ready for a law suit.
