I must be an idiot, but I have the worst time re-loading a grease gun. Its one in 5 tubes that works.

I pull back the spring plunger, open it up, take out the old and put the new cartridge in, tighen the case back up tight, and let the spring go at the back. Start pumping to build pressure, and it NEVER BUILDS PRESSURE. This is my second gun after my first one had an 'accident'.

This isnt rocket science, its much harder. What is the deal?

I would sure like to have help with this, type to me like a newbie, I am. I need lots of detail.

I've found keeping the grease tube warm helps a lot. I keep mine in the house and it helps the grease to "flow" when priming the gun. I put the new tube in, leave the cap just slightly loose and pump the rod in and out a few dozen times. Almost always works the first time, but repeat if necessary. If all else fails, put the gun over a heat register, imerse in a pail of HOT water or hang it by the wood stive. When that grease gets warm enough, it'll flow

Hey Jake,

There are only three things in this world that I hate and two of them is a grease gun.

I finally got rich enough to buy a Linclon battery operated portable gun. All I have to do it hold the vent bleeder down and run the thing till the grease runs down my shirt sleeve and drips off my elbow. Than I know the gun will pump on a zerk.

Now all I have to figure out is how to maintain these @#$%&* batteries so they will last more than a couple months. Nicad batteries are the third thing I hate.

Joe

I see that I don't have as much patience as the rest of the fellows...as when my grease gun gets air locked I smack it on the rear tire of the tractor and it seems to cure the problem most of the time. And it is a lot faster than fiddling with the greasy old thing. Ever try washing your hands with grease when they're filthy? That was a good way when I was a kid out in the fields when no soap and water was available...and using a burlap bag to wipe it all off with. Fred OH

Alot of good advise for installing a new tube and bleeding the air. Now if they could just come up with a way to make 100% sure that the tube in the gun, when you pick it up and walk out back to grease the tractor, doesn't go dry after the first pump you could make a mint..... ..

Wayne: Well, you could check to see how much grease is left in the gun before going out to the tractor... I know--I've done the same thing, but if you take a second to pull out the handle and see how much is left, it can save you a walk.

jake, allways store new tubes with "lift and pull end" DOWN. when changing tubes, i allways install tube and release the plunger just enough to get the air pocket off the top, where the grease is level with the top of the tube, maybe just a little higher, then put top back on all the way.
this works on both the manual and air operated. have never had to bother with bleeder valves or leaving top loose. works everytime for me

here is a little short cut...after you put the new tube in, don't tighten the head down all the way, pump the handle untill it primes itself(you'll hear the air escape around the threads), then tighten it down.....this saves you from removing the bleeder screw

You're getting good advice. I just want to add two things. Get a good gun and good grease. You don't have to break the bank, but the cheap ones will just frustrate you. I used to buy TSC grease on sale and I had a lot of the same problems you describe. Better grease helped and then I bought a better gun.(aprox. $20) Now I seldom have a problem.

you are sure right about that cheap TSC grease. i have had the same problem. it must be the grease has lots of air pockets. when i bought a better and more expensive brand of grease, my problems seem to disappear.

Most guns have a screw at the top to loosen and release air. It may have a slot or a square head. Loosen it, pump, and the trapped air should be expelled.

Make sure you store your replacement tubes with the right end up (they'll be labeled). After you put the new tube in just start threading the top on the gun, leave it loose, don't tighten it all the way down. Now push the plunger in. Pump the gun as you turn the body to tighten it. When you're done you should be air free!

There should be a plug on top of the grease gun take the gun apart and remove the plug and install a grease zerk in it place now put the gun back together with grease tube installed. If the grease gun is air locked push the ball of the zerk down with a screwdriver or punch and the air will excape and the gun should be fine.

thanks guys, I will go and try these things. I use good lubriplate grase but a chinese made gun. Its an all steel one from napa though so I thought I had a decent one.

No one bit onto my last ones 'accident', I was trying to be funny... the accident was it flying across the shop to the concrete wall.

Thanks again

If you are air bound with a small air bubble in the grease, either at the beginning or midway through the tube you can sometimes get it going by taking off the nozzle tube or hose and on the return stroke cover the opening with your finger to create a suction which will draw the air and grease into the pump of the gun. It may take a few strokes to get it purged f air. The other advise is also good and the way you have to deal with grease guns. If the handle sort of springs back after you have pumped it and no grease comes out, it is air bound.
